So its come to renewal time again. I rang my current insurer to see if they would reduce their quote.. anyway to cut a long story short they confirmed that i have held my licence for 5 years and that I have 8 years no claims discount.

I queried this and they just said that its fine and correct as im using 5 from my current car and they have added three from the civic i sold 2 years ago. even though i only ever had 1 car insured at a time.

anyone else had stupid things like that pop up. Anyway its sub £300 for the year so happy days.

sounds fishy to me, this means you could get 5 years no claims by buying 5 scrapped classic cars, insuring them for next to nothing for a year and then reaping the reward in the hugely discounted NCB bonus.

anyone else heard of this?

That would be 5 separate NCDs not all added up for 1 large NCD

You don't usually use or accrue NCB on classic policies !

Who's the insurer?

but for me they are adding separate ones together.

5 years driving

2 in current car,
2 in previous
1 in first
---------------
TOTAL 5

+previous cars again = 8

Be careful, that who you believe to be the "insurer" isn't actually just a broker who earns a commission from the sale.

I thought NCB was on the driver, not the vehicle?

Yea it is, it only counts as one set so you can have as many policies as you want but you can only ever accrue 1 years ncb in a year, (unless its a 10 month policy or an 8 month accelerator) and you cant add ncb gained together, I.e two cars insured at the same time over 3 years means you have 2x 3 years ncb discount to use on any two policies but you cant add them together to make 6 years.

I actually did something similar on my first insurance renewal, my Mk2 Golf was insured on a classic policy with Footman James the first year, who kindly informed me 3 days before renewal I wouldn't be able to renew due to changing underwriters and they could no longer insure me.

Later that day my dad was sorting his renewal with admiral so while we was on the phone we asked if they could do anything for me as I'd had a classic policy and never claimed and although as it was a classic policy you don't recieve any NCB. The guy disappeared for a minute or two to speak to a manager and said they'd honour a years no claims for me.

Meant I paid the same for two years insurance as most people I know have paid for they're first

I think thats just footman James, i know Adrian Flux do NCB on classic policies, as do most of the others, Footman James seem to have gone downhill considerably, and peter james insurance seem to have nabbed most of FJ's classic business.

They buggered a lot of people up with changing their profile, underwriters have been running from them for a while now.

FJ were superb when I had a policy with them. Cheap, accommodating, friendly, all round pleasure to do business with. Every other dealing I have had with a car insurer has been a total hassle.
Flux would have to be an absolute last resort, they are incompetent to put it politely. Two total cockups with their own paperwork on my policy within the first 3 weeks. Can't even get their own process right so heaven only knows what happens if the **** actually hit the fan :/

Been with Flux for 3 years and they have been fine with me. FJ were a total PITA when it came to dealing with them since they were taken over by AON.

Had similar happen. When I first passed I was added to my parents existing insurance and set as the main driver in November. Come renewal in January they offered me 1 years NCB despite only having my licence just under 3 months.

My wife had a similar thing when she passed. As she had a pass-plus certificate, they automatically gave her 1 years NCB so she had two years NCB after her first year of driving.

Octagon Insurance

LOL - thought it would be them. My wife (named driver on my policy) did a good job of smashing mine and someone elses car up, so that claim went against my policy. They told me i'd lose 2 years NCB as a result.

When the renewal letter came through, I had an extra 2 years NCB added on instead of taken off :p

BTW - I did not have protected NCB.
