Silly question (AS5 application)

I agree with that, I use a phone top up card, nice and flexible. Thin as possible, almost see through. Best to use a know flat edge and make sure the IHS is flat first, the C2D's can be very concave. If it is concave and you use the grain method alone, you'll end up with a small blob in the middle.

Small blob size as recommended by manufacturer (i.e. right amount) then spread about half of it out from the centre with a finger inside a clean plastic bag (e.g. sandwich bag) .

That way you know you have reached the edges of the die, the pressure exerted by the HS will also even out the rest.

Are you sure? It is kinda hard to avoid getting a bit on your hands now and again. Obviously don't eat it or anything but I doubt it can be that bad if you just get a bit on your hands.

On another note, the AS5 instructions link, they say not to use a citrus oil based cleaner, would that include Akasa TIM Cleaner?
 
The Citrus oil cleaner that they are talking about are Automotive
degreasers that is Citrus oil mixed with a very fine oil like WD40
as Automotive degreasers leave behind a fine film of oil on the metal
parts to stop them going rusty when cleaned.

This doesn't apply to Akasa TIM Cleaner as that is citrus extract
(Citric Acid the same stuff in Vinegar and Ketchup) mixed with
petrolium distillates (IE :lighter Fuel) that evaporates and leaves
next to no residue.Citrus extract is one of the best metal cleaners
as it only removes the top layer of oxide and removes less metal
than metal cleaners like Brasso that are slighly abbrasive.

As for being Toxic i'm not sure on the full details but apparently
most thermal compounds contain oxides that you are supposed to
avoid as they can irritate your body if your in regular contact with
it but we have all got it on our hands at sometime ,but rubbing it on
with your finger like "The Asgard" isn't a good idea as your then rubbing
the ingredients into and small cuts and abrasions .

Don't give it to children or leave it where children can get a hold of it.
Keep it away from pets.
Removal Instructions (From You)
Wash your hands with any dish washing detergent (Dawn, Lux, Palmolive, Etc.) rather than hand soap. (Do not use soap for an automatic dishwasher.)
 
Finger in clear sandwich bag (or similar) and put a small amount in the centre of the CPU (1/2 grain of rice is about right, perhaps a tiny bit more). Then put some on the bottom of the HS and with the finger in the bag spread very evenly across the base of the HS. Only has to be a very thin layer just to fill in any gaps (almost opaque). Then put the HS on the CPU and twist slightly from side to side and fasten the HS on to the board being sure not to lift it off. :)

That way, you have a nice thin coat on the base of the HS and the blob on the CPU should spread out evenly. Works for me everytime and I get good temps. :)

Too true. I've been playing with hardware far too long to be following the 'exact mythology' too closely.

For example, never used TIM clean. A clean, non-perfumed peice of bog roll does the job best.

Infact, I've just remounted my X1900GT cooler with some AS5, and used a tesco clubcard to do the trick.
 
As said in an earlier post, I thought I would post some results on my remount job on the cooler of my X1900GT.

After removing the cooler, cleaning the gloop up with a tissue to shiny finish on both GPU and HS, and using AS5, I've got a 5C reduction in temps! YaY! There was far too much gloop on there, but with the help of my Vodafone top up card I got a nice even level of AS and it seems to work a treat.

And, after the break in period, it might even reduce down a few more C. Hope so. After testing the AS results, I've also increased the fan speed from 37% to 68% and gotten another 10C drop! No real noticeable sound increase really, It only gets a little annoying when the fan goes 85%+.

So from 89C down to 74C is far more comfortable at full load when playing FEAR.

This is what I thought, it's been common knowledge not to use skin because of oils.
 
For years I have used stanley blades to apply my compounds. with both IHS and bare core cpu's. Works perfectly for me. I just clean the blade with IPA beforehand and job done. This is the way that I will continue to use. After a couple of hundred heatsink fittings easy and no blips so far I don't see any reason to change ;).
 
I found it hard to give up the "Spread the AS all over with a credit card" method from moving IHS less XP's to the new A64's.

However after reading the Arctic Silver webpage I ended up trying their method of rubbing some AS into the base of the heatsink, then putting a blob of AS in the middle, seating the heatsink and twisting it slightly.

Seems to work fine.
