Just been hit by a rootkit on one of the PC`s at work. No Idea exactly how it got in, but it did, and its proved impossible to remove. (WinNt/Ramnit.gen!a)

So, I want to grab any useful data from the drive and re-install. Last time I had to do this was in the days of IDE.

How can I plug this drive into my machine at home to grab the data, without it booting? Obviously, there are no Master/Slave options on Sata.

Is it just a case of setting the boot drive in the bios or is there more to it? I dont have a Sata external enclosure to hand.

As far as I know it's simply a case of plugging it in, assuming no BIOS changes from your original setup then the MBR will be on the drive you already boot from will operate as normal.

Just make sure that the original drive is still set as the boot device after installing the other SSD just in case.

Um I believe Sata uses a boot order of some description not quite Master and Slave like IDE but I can't remember what I read/where I read it was quite some time ago :/

Sata ports are usually numbered, starting with 0. As long as the drive is higher in number than the boot drive, then it should be fine.

Check the bios when booting to be sure.
