#F1 An ex-McLaren driver told me the team 'can't afford to keep Jenson because they pay Lewis so much.' Make of that what you will...

Hopefully it's just the usual contract negotiation rumors flying around, but is there really any chance that they're not going to retain button? He's outscoring his teammate, seems in the form of his life and more importantly, who would they replace him with?

This is exactly it

Who else would they want to do the job ? Vettel and Webber aren't going to be interested in playing Lewis No.2, and hell would freeze over before Alonso came back as lewis' no 2.

The sort of people who would want a move like this (say Kobayashi or Petrov) i'm not sure they'd even want.

They could look at Di resta, but it seems common knowledge he's destined to replace MSC at Mercedes.

Button is just jumping on the Hamilton-bashing bandwagon of late :) End of the day Button has more points than his team mate and we're past the half way point of the season. That HAS to mean something in terms of his salary negotiations!

He won't be leaving McLaren, he has nowhere to go and he clearly loves that team now.

Where exactly is this "Button is just jumping on the bandwagon".. first I've heard of it..

Mclaren are loaded & they work great together, seems a non-story to me? I can see JB being there for 2-3 years and then retiring / do testing only.

seeing as were taking next year, vettel n webber are signed to redbull for next year anyway so no point even saying there names, same goes for Alonso at Ferrari.

McLaren would be silly to let him leave seeing as he is winning races and scoring good points

How would an 'ex-McLaren driver' know this kind of thing?

Sounds like random hot air to me!

But assuming it is something to do with Button's pay negotiations, I'd have thought that he probably will struggle to be paid the same as Lewis, it's not that he doesn't deserve it, it's just Lewis has had them over a barrel, as I'm sure Alonso/Vettel has done with their teams..

He deserves to be on equal footing, but he just seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time...

i expect button to finish his career at McLaren.

i also doubt McLaren are low on cash that they cant afford to pay a driver.

maybe they could save some on these super computers and hire some 5 year olds to do strategy.

Vettel is signed for at least two more years at RedBull, Alonso has three(four?) years left on his current contract. Webber has just signed a one year deal with Redbull (and will probably be replaced at the end of the 2012-3 season by one of the TorroRosso drivers).
Kobayashi and Petrov just don't seem like a good fit for Mclaren (not consistent enough) . And most of the young drivers are tied to development contracts with one of the other big teams.

Expect Button to sign a two season deal, he seems well liked at Mclaren and probably has another world championship in him if all his ducks line up in a row. This would allow them to hedge their bets on getting another young driver ready for F1 if Lewis decides to walk at the end of his current contract, while still having an established driver ion the team.

Tripe ...

Button will 100% resign for Mclaren for the 2012 season

This. Mclaren have an option for 2012 and IMO they'd be bat**** crazy to even contemplate anyone else. I suspect button will be insistent on a wage increase which I think McLaren will be happy to pay as well. There was a suspicion that Jenson was immensely flattered by the Brawn in 2009 which was why his wages were lower than you'd expect for a World Champion as well as the fact he really wanted to drive for them so didn't push so hard on the money front. Any suspicion that Jenson was gifted the WDC by the car should be well and truly laid to rest with his performances this season. he will sign, probably for two years at least.

With regard to Red bull I suspect Christian Horner has looked at the Torro Rosso drivers and while they appear good enough for TR they are nowhere near what Red Bull would expect so he's signed Webber for another season. i can't see Buemi or Alguersari EVER driving for Red Bull. TBH i'd expect very little movement over the next couple of seasons until Webber retires and then we might see some changes.

Red Bull:
Vettel: Won't leave. EVER unless they create two years or rubbish cars. unlikely!)
Webber: Maybe has another year after 2012 but not much more than that.

Ferrari:
Alonso has a multi year deal and I suspect will retire before driving for anyone else
Massa is a difficult one. Obviously well liked at Maranello but needs to improve. Possibility of massa for 2012 then Perez from Sauber.

Mclaren:
Hamilton: multi year contract, doubt he'd leave to go anywhere TBH
Button: Will sign for another 2-3 years I think.

Lotus Renault:
Petrov (has done well and brings sponsorship)
Kubica/Senna if bruno continues to impress.

Mercedes:
Schuey will complete his three year deal
Rosberg will also stay i think.
Di Resta to take Schuey's place for 2013

Force India areharder to call:
Sutil has consistently failed to impress
Di Resta will stay for 2012 then move to Mercedes

Sauber:
Perez (a Ferrari young driver remember) has signed for 2012, then to Ferrari
Kobayashi has also signed for 2012. Would love to see him get a chance at a top team, maybe Mclaren in 2014?

Torro Rosso:
Buemi and Alguersari are more difficult to call. have done quite well recently but still prone to errors. I suspect Ricciardo will have one of the seats if not next year then in 2013.

Lotus:
Will continue to improve. i don't think they could improve on Trulli and Kovalienen. both experienced drivers who have raced top cars so know how to develop the car.

Virgin:
Really haven't a clue. Wouldn;t be surprised to see them drop out or get bought out at some point.

HRT:
Will bow out after this season I reckon.

The list of 'ex-McLaren drivers' is quite long, and some of them have openly had negative opinions towards Hamilton.

Nothing but typical paddock hot air tbh.
