Been waiting for a Silver Arrow on Backorder since i installed my upgrade in october.... Still no definitive answer from OC regarding when this stock will be replenished...

Now they have reduced the Noctua NH-D14 Cooler... :(... should I cut my losses and pay the extra to get the Noctua ??

Anyone know if there is much of a difference in performance ?? Planning on O/C from current 4.0ghz on stock to 4.6ghz with a decent cooler...
 
The two a very similar in performance - basically nothing in it.

The reason the SA is so highly recommended is that the performance to price ratio is excellent.

If you shop around you can still pick up Silver Arrows that are in stock - but if you can't wait and want to purchase from OcUK then the D14 is a great cooler, you wouldn't be disappointed as the performance is the same as the SA.
 
I went with the Noctua NH-D14, as nowhere I trust has had the Silver Arrow in stock for months. I used it on my QX6700 for a few months, allowing me to overclock it to 3.4GHz while keeping the temperatures below 65C. It was a huge improvement over the retro Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro that was on there previously, which would often fail to keep the CPU below 65C at stock (2.66GHz). The QX6700 was a notoriously hot processor when overclocked, so this should go some way to demonstrate how good a cooler it is.

As for how the Silver Arrow and the NH-D14 compare, a quick search on the web shows that they are very similar in terms of performance. It seems that LGA2011 kits are available for both, which is good for compatibility in the future.

Edit: I've just seen that the NH-D14 is now £11 less than it was when I got mine - at that price I'm almost tempted to advise you to just go ahead and buy one :p

get the noctua. a few days ago i asked the mods about the silver arrow and they could not guarantee that it would be available before christmas
 
I dont know if i'm allowed to pimp my own threads but i have a Silver Arrow for sale in the members market if you're interested.
 
Yes there are a few, its basically neck and neck with the SA and the D14. Still very pricey though. The only reason I'd ever suggest it is if you wanted the cooler and fans coloured to match a certain colour scheme. Otherwise its just money down the drain.

As mentioned the SA is instock elsewhere, although stock does run dry quickly and it seems to take ages for retailers to get it back in so I wouldn't hang around if you do want one.
 
Yip I've seen SA on other sites but I've already paid for the SA on oc site as it was billed with all my other gear I ordered.. I've dropped them a web note asking to switch to the noctua.. I'll pay the difference and hopefully get it early next week..
 
I know you wanted the SA but that's a good price for the Noctua - you wont be disappointed.

I have a Silver Arrow but have fitted a Noctua and there's really nothing between them performance wise.
 
You could always put a pair of TY-140's on the noctua, would essentially make it cosmetically a Silver Arrow....granted, noctua fans are ugly as sin.

Agreed, they aren't the most aesthetically pleasing colour but i think they've achieved what they set out to do with the colour scheme - i.e. you instantly associate those colours with Noctua and quality.

Mind you i'm not a massive fan of my SA fan colours either...
