I use Microsoft synctoy for full backups to my Synology DS712+ NAS and then my 25gb windows skydrive for keeping my photo's remotely backed up.

Doesnt one have to 'make' the 2 folders first, save data in 2 places before using Synctoy?

No. It can be used for one way syncing.

Windows 7 backup is a good solution, it not only provides automated backup but files are easy to recover using the "restore previous versions" option on a file right-click menu. Home Edition does not allow backup to a network device, so for automated backup you need a external drive or similar attached the whole time.
