I know there has been a lot posted already about "drive optimsation" and many people have differing opinions. I'll just say what I'm thinking of doing and really just want to know if I could do it better.

From the outset I DON'T think I'm interested in RAID.

1 x 74gb Raptor for O/S and applications and games (all lumped together)

1 x 500gb Seagate 7200.10 for photos, video, and music

Would that be fine and dandy?

If you're avoiding RAID then that's about as good a setup as you can get.

You might want to look at the WD AAKS drive as a possible substitute for the Seagate, it's a shade faster but maybe not enough to be noticable as a storage drive.

Thanks Stew, I'll certainly check out that alternative

One quick word on what the Raptor would hold.

As I've said, the o/s games and apps would be just thrown on there any old way - there wouldn't be any performance benefits from using partitions (to split these three things up) would there? I would guess "no" as they're all on the same drive after all...

On something that small I wouldn't bother with multiple partitions.

The only reason I partition my boot array is so that I can reinstall XP if I have to without disturbing the contents of the rest of the disk. In your case you could use the 500Gb disk to backup My Docs etc if you need to reinstall.
