Hi All,

I've been asked to see if I can sort out remote access for someone to their office. They have a bog standard Belkin adsl router and a few windows PC's. No domains or anything clever. Not sure if they have a static IP but if not I guess I can use dyndns and work from that.

Is the easiest / cheapest way to just stick OpenVPN on one of their Windows PC's , port forward the OpenVPN port to this box and job's a good un? Do I need any special client on the remote (laptop) or is it just a normal VPN connection?

I assume this will be secure enough. Or are there any other alternatives. If I can avoicd spending money it's preferred.

OpemVPN is very good and much better than pptp imho. Even if you went for the old box i would still use openVPN on it.

Although i would probably try and use both, as windows has the pptp client built in its easy from that point of view
 
gotomypc or one of them sort of programs sounds like it would do the job.. You would be up & running in 5 minutes with zero costs.
 
They are remote access envrionments, which may or may not be encrypted.

A VPN is encrypted from the get go (ok, to be pendantic it doesnt have to be but 99% of the time it is) and provides you with normal network access - you woudl normally acesss VNC through the VPN, or use direct samba shares/http access etc.
 
The VPN will basically create a tunnel to the remote network, and in essence your machine will then be *on* that network. You'd then need to remotely access/control your machine by another method.

It would probably be easier to use VNC:
