Simple DVD question

Would a DVD RW work in say a standard DVD Player or would it have to be DVD R ?thanks

some do and some don't.It normally says on the box what it can read, or sometimes it's silk screen printed on the front of the unit.

+RW doesn't need finalising
-RW does need finalising
both + and - R need finalising.

Everybody I've given a disk too has been able to play it.

+ and -RW can be initialised to be used again.
