Simple guide To Overclocking An I7 to 4Ghz

I did 191x21 = 4011mhz and set my vcore at 1.275v and qpi /vtt at 1.30v and dram 1.66v and set the rest on auto with LLC disabled. Got temp of just below 70C with 1.168vcore under load with prime95 blend test.

Again 200x21 = 4200mhz and set my vcore at 1.30v and qpi/vtt at 1.32v and dram at 1.66v and set the rest on auto with LLC enabled. Got temp of just below 80C with 1.248vcore under load with prime95 blend test.

Both passed 24 hours prime95.

Remember you had a cherry picked chip! However take bulldogs volts and add 1 or 2 notches to them and you will be safe :)

But will they fold at those volts without errors, thats the true test :D
 
By the way my guide was written for 3D VFX artists and not hard core overclockers, the aim was to get to 4.0 Ghz as quickly and as safely as possible without having to learn Klingon
 
No way I can get anywhere near those volts bulldog. I must have the worlds worst D0 920. :(

Closest I can get is 195x20 with vcore at 1.3125 and qpi/vtt at 1.3125
Did have dram at 1.64 but bumped it to 1.66 just in case.
But I have to have LLC on which means that vcore under load is 1.32

I did have it at 1.375 at those speeds but thought I'd try lowering the volts to get a cooler rig. So I'm not sure how stable it is yet, the jury (and testing) is still out :)

But the machine is under a fair amount of stress so be interesting to see how it does.

Sorry to hear it but what is your i7 920d0 batch number ?

i'm in the same boat dude, although i've just settled for 4.2GHz with a hefty amount of voltage... thank god for watercooling :D
 
Nice guide!

My 920 does:

4GHz (19 x 211) with 1.268v and 1.325 qpi, vdimm is 1.66v, LLC on
4.2Ghz (21 x 200) with 1.350v and 1.325 qpi, vdimm is 1.66v, LLC on

I cannot get stable 4Ghz with the '20' multi and needs too much volts, this is not uncommon from my reading around. Not too worried though...

Seems 1.35v for 4.2GHz is not uncommon and bulldog is a lucky chap with a chip that will do 4.2GHz with only 1.3v!
 
LLC with the later gigabyte boards is a bit odd, on the X58-UD3R the setting was either off or on, with the X58A the settings are standard(off - use full vdroop) Level 1 slightly adjust vdroop Level 2 moderately adjust vdroop

So with my board there is no way to fully turn vdroop off. This may be why i cannot get the overclocks stable using other peoples settings when i attempt to trun vdroop off
 
I can get close to bulldogs volts, but i won't be folding stable, but would be Prime/IBT stable.

My 4ghz clock is :

4GHz (20 x 200) with 1.2875v (bios) 1.272v (loaded) and 1.3v qpi, vdimm is 1.65v, LLC on, Temps never gone over 70c yet, and generally in the low 60's.

Can't remember higher clock settings and volts, not fully tested, leaving that till winter really lol. But i have had 4.6ghz with HT on, at under intels max vcore spec :D, just in summer temps where to high for my liking lol.

Thats some drop in vcore underload bulldog has on his non LLC clock, but think we all agree he has a nice cpu though.

I may have to play about with different multi's soon, think next time i get bored i'll see what i can do.
 
I am very sorry for all of you had to push more vcore voltage as I was very lucky indeed as I didn't pick my cherry chip, as it was Rich (ocuk) had picked the cherry chip when I brought my i7 4ghz bundle a year ago. I guess, I am a lucky guy.

I did 4.6Ghz with HT on but only in winter (colder room temperature) but I will use 4.6Ghz on custom water soon. :)
 
Yeh im waiting for the winter ambients so i can clock it higher for folding purposes, i could get away with it now, as it would only go upto 80's if i did, but i hate going that high.

nope, that title sir, is mine.

my mobo show's my default vcore as 1.3 (and can't lower it on the bloodrage)

cant get to 4ghz without 1.34, can't get stable at 4.2 without 1.4 :(

luckily it's all under water and i'll be swapping out my 920 with a 950 if the price drops do happen in sept.

Without LLC i.e vdroop is on i need a minimum of 1.375 v in Bios to get 4.0 ghz on my I7 930 this shoes as 1.29 under load in BIOS but temps are OK with a MAX of 80C in Prime95 with my Noctua, Note this is with 12 GB RAM which could have an influence

I wish there was some magic combination of settings i could find that would allow for lower cpu volts

You're be fine anything up to 80C in temperature! i7 920 d0 and i7 920 c0 is fine up to 80C! I get max temp of below 78C for 4.20Ghz.
 
For 4ghz (21x191), i have 1.2750 set in bios, 1.264 under load, LLC enabled, qpi/vtt at 1.3125, ram at 1.64v 1547 mhz, 7-7-7-24 1T, temps at load in LinX hit 76-69-71-69. Cooling is a lapped TRUE with 2 x vipers. Could go higher during the winter or if i stuck it under water cooling.

Yeh i know, but i hate going that high, my cooling can easily handle it, thats not an issue, i just like having my temps as low as i can get really.

For example im currently folding away with temps of 56/65/57/61 with my rad fans at 1000rpm (mainly to keep system cooler, as they are intakes too).

Really must reseat my waterblock at some point, that 1 high core is annoying, but need to get some new TIM first and im lazy lol.

So as you can tell i still have a lot of head room even with the current ambients.

Not bad for a cpu only loop that cost me £100 :p
