Simple newbie question best back up app for XP

Wife wants to back up her entire Win Xp Laptop files with a simple but effective programe.

What would be the prefered choice? She is looking to back up to either disc or external usb drive.

Thanks for the info however does this back up the root files as well ie programe and windows files? I forgot to ask that question in the OP..
OR would it be better to look for a prorgame that copies the entire image Win files as well as any other files so its a true 1:1 image?
