I've used seagate diskcheck for psychical errors which lasted around 45mins that passed with 0 errors however when using seagate filecheck tool i got this:

Some files of the volume are open. This may effect the accuracy of the file system check and result in false errors.

The file system contains errors that need to be repaired.

Now i know diskcheck could solve this but does anyone know a good programme that could help? when i try to use windows diskcheck it says:

cannot access volume for direct access

Then it just stops doing it and loads up windows. Is there a way to solve this?

Please help, thank you.

I forgot to mention, when i try to play a game on the pc the hardrive makes a click noise, only once then my fps drop to like 5-10 aka unplayable.(sometimes pc locks and i have to reboot, but sometimes it doesn't do this and i can play on my pc for a long time if i wanted)

I've reformatted my hd which hasn't rid it, seagate website says hd is healthy so do my diskchecks yet i also ran checkdisk finally but got no errors either.I am also using the auto detect new hardware drivers with windows perhaps this could be the problem? any suggestions? this is becoming really frustrating.

So you tried a

chkdsk /p /r

from command prompt? I don't understand why windows won't run it. If that is the case, whip out your XP CD and run recovery console and run chkdsk from there.

The random stopping suggests that there is something wrong with the drive. I had this on one of my raptors and sent it back for a new one. I suggest you backup your data and do the same.

Yeah i got chkdsk /r working with windows cd however that didn't help, so did reformat twice and even ran windows chkdsk but got no errors.I've used a lot of programmes even done S.M.A.R.T tests on it resulting in none of the programmes picking up bad things about the hardrive.(this is what confuses me)

Could the power supply cause this problem?

My specs are: athlon 3500 winchester, 1024mb crucial ddr ram, 6800gt 256ddr, 200gb seagate barracuda hd, antec trueblue psu 480w and using windows xp home edition.

I've tried a few more programmes all reporting that the hd is in good condition, it now seems it's not getting enough power or cable is messed up.(i checked cable earlier though and is connected fine perhaps i should try another)

Is there any programmes to see if the hd is getting enough power?

My knowledge with hardrives isn't that great sadly, been 20 hours trying to fix this now heh.(thanks for advice so far smids, hope you can provide more if possible)

Your power supply is fine. Umm, try a different cable. If that doesn't work, then send it back to seagate outlining the problem as those are often controller board (the green board on the HDU) problems which don't show up as drive errors in any testing programs but still make the drive faulty.

Hmmm i've just found a disk that came with my motherboard says "nforce 3 SATA RAID driver" , now whats odd is when i go to my computer, then device manager then ATA controllers, below it has the serial ata nforce controllers yet it doesn't pick any hds up under these.I am trying cable very soon, going to switch the cdrw cable with my hd cable to eliminate that issue.

But could this disk fix the problem? it seems odd it isn't picking the hardrive up there. If cable and this doesn't work then it's most likely what you stated above.

Also forgot to say i have a neo 2 platinum motherboard.

Have you connected the SATA drive to one of the two ports near the CPU, rather than the ones towards the bottom right of the board? If not, and you have overclocked, then the 2 ports FURTHEST from the CPU alos get overclocked and don't function well at all. Use the two slots closest to the CPU. That disk you have will not help - they will only contain old drivers and the newest drivers can be obtained by installing the nV IDE SW drivers from the latest chipset package from nVidia.

I tried reconnecting sata cable to the connectors leftside of the cpu very near it, it was currently in the left furhest sata connector below cpu and this made no difference.Haven't tried new psu cable yet as an awful lot of wires in way, it's quite a lot of hassle to get to so i am just going to buy a new hardrive.(i am very sure it's broken now.)

Any suggestions for a good sata hardrive for £50-60? i have neo 2 platinum board aswell.I was thinking of going western digital but have heard hitachi are good too? if you can give a model recommendation smids or someone else it would be welcome, thanks for the help again.

You might not need to buy new, especially as all seagate drives have a 5 year warranty. Check your serial number on the seagate website and see if you can just get it replaced. The reason I say this is because seagates are one of the best drives and it would be one of my recommendations. You seem to have a faulty one but at least you can get all your data backup up ;) - hint hint - and then replace it.

If you still want a new drive, then I'd say the Hitachi T7K250 or a seagate 7200.9 drive.

Just a few more questions smids, i got my RMA form emailed to me today from seagate however i was just wondering how long would it take my new hd to come from them? the shipping address is based in coventry.

Also would a SATA 2 hardrive work on my neo 2 platinum board?

SATA-2 works fine. Usually turn around time is about 2 weeks (max) I'm afraid. You could RMA to the retailer if within 1 year which might be quicker. Either way, send a detailed report to them of the problem, stating that the controller board might be at fault due to the spin down during operation problems you have suffered etc. Just make sure they know exactly what to look for because the drive is actually fine otherwise and this problem isn't often tested immediately.
