Simple questions about memory.

Hello,

The last part of my pc i have left to upgrade is the memory and unfortunately it is the area I'm most unsure of.

1) Why do system analyzers (CPU-z and speccy) say the DRAM frequency is 667Mhz when I'm adamant the frequency i purchased was 1600? Moreover, my BIOS says it's 1333Mhz just to add to the confusion.

2)Following my previous question, can you only add to your memory ASSUMING you only add memory of the same frequency?

3)I'm familiar with dual channel and frequencies. Are there any other specifications of memory that differentiate it?

its to do with ddr double data rate that whatever number cpu-z gives you in the memory tab you have to double or times it by two = your actual ram speed

for stability/compatibility its always best to add in the same make/model/spec of ram or buy a matched kit 16gb/32gb where each stick has been tested/bundled together to work at rated speeds ect

If you purchase any ram kit of 1600mhz or higher they default automatically to the spd speed of 1333mhz, divide this by 2 to get the 667 seen in cpuz. This is where the term double data rate comes from. To get the ram running at it's rated speed, you either enter the primary timings, speed and voltages in bios, or if the ram is XMP certified, enabling XMP will do this for you.

Adding memory, yes ideally if upping ram content you want the same kits to avoid conflicts with timings and voltages.

To take this a little further, if you have 8GB but want 16GB total then better to buy a matched 16GB set then sell the 8GB on in MM or fleabay.

It's never recommended to mix memory, even if it's the same type and batch. That's why they're sold as kits.

Ive had no problems using 4x4gb tbh, memory controller voltage will need upped a touch yes. Corsair vengeance lp, had 8 then added a further 8gb a bit later. But if i was going for 16gb again it would be in a 2x 8 config as it places less strain on the memory controller as opposed to filling all slots.
