Simple software for HTPC

My boss is looking to put together a HTPC and transfer all his DVDs onto it. I'm thinking of using Media Portal as the GUI but what software and codec are simple to use for somebody not too tech. Also I'm trying to work out what kind of screen res he is going to get from his current plasma, it only has component in there are no digital connections (Sony KDE-P42XS1) he might change the tv is need be but would rather use this one if poss.

Any ideas re the software/codec and screen suitabilty would be appreciated.
