Simple Website for Work

Yesterday one of my bosses got a call from BT regarding advertising for my place of work. Already we advertise in the Yellow Pages, Phonebook and Yell.com. A google search for the company name or practises in our area we appear quite near if not at the top. But in the surrounding areas we dont feature at all as we're not based there.

Now BT were offering a service where we could get a domain name linking us to our two nearest areas and as a result have more of an interest from potential clients. Now BT were offering this service for £300 initial set up charge with a monthly fee of £69. Advertising this way would work out slightly cheaper than our current methods but I see this as a rip off.

Would it not be better to buy a website name www.companyname.co.uk (seen for £6 for two years) along with a host (brief look and justhost.com can host for £1.95 per month (also seen that this place might not be the best just using as an example here) and use key words for google to pick up on to yield more results?

The site doesn't need to be vastly complicated (cos chances are I'd have to design it!) just really a introduction on the company, a contacts page and maybe a brief gallery.

In summary, will creating a website with keywords yield google search results useful to potential clients at a reduced cost in comparison to the offer which BT phoned up about.

I'm not a web guru but a simple web hosting package and a domain name shouldn't cost anything like £69 a year let alone a month. And £300 set up charge?!

A simple Wordpress site, themed to your firm's colour scheme, on a Vidahost/TSO Host account with a domain name from 123-Reg should be a good setup for your company. :)

was looking at 123-reg for domain names, will look at TSO and Vida to see what they're like for prices as well thanks :)

Thats the simple answer i was looking for :D

I always knew BT were a bunch of money-grabbing c-units.

That's apalling OP.

As soon as i heard the prices the woman on the phone quoted alarm bells started ringing with me as well!

I'm sure that using tsohost or vidahost as your domain registrar would be better. no web forwarding or anything to mess around with. as said above, get a half decent host, domain name, wordpress, theme and robert is your mother's brother!

I have looked at wordpress from a personal website point of view and I think it should do a job for the office as well. Its just a matter of getting things put together that will be the issue as i have very little website building experience ;) Might have to practice on my own website first then put forward the proposal to the office. :)

Well I've taken the plunge for my personal website tonight and am awaiting approval

Opted for Vidahost, with the basic server biannual renewal with a 10% discount code and free registration of a domain name for 2 years at a total cost of £30 so I'll be fiddling about with that over the next couple of days to get things up and running :)

Questions to follow :p

of course...
I'd say the first thing is get wordpress ftp'd up...and working
And welcome to the wonderful world of websites

right problem number one already......

I've got the wordpress stuff uploaded using filezilla onto my website but when i run the http://******************.co.uk/admin/wp-admin/install.php file it comes up with the error
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.

I would like to think that I've got my own username and password correct so i reckon that the database server is incorrect?

EDIT:

I stand corrected. I had my username wrong :D

I'm assuming you are using the database username/password and not the ftp/account one?

I was using my admin name but there was a prefix to it which i didn't think was needed, but double checked the database area and it was *********_admin not just admin. This could take more than the 5 min installation that wordpress boasts :p

It's because you stuck the WP files in the /admin/ folder, and it's taken that as your root.

Kill the DB, move all the files into the root folder, and run the installer again.

(That'll be quicker than trying to "amend" the install/home locations)
