Simple Website for Work

as said above, you need to put everything in the root folder, not admin. then when you install it, pick a username (don't pick admin, -admin, _admin or similiar it's a security risk and also comes up in your posts etc. and can be picked up) and of you go.

use fantastico/softaculous (think its softaculous on vida) to install wordpress, you dont need to upload wp, just a few clicks and you'll have wp installed in under a minute. Choose the root folder, public html to install in.

I think my head is going to explode. I've got the home page up and running albeit with no content yet. But i did manage to remove the public_html folder and www folder somehow

I think I'll give it a small break till after 5 a side tonight. I'm using the Grace Theme on wordpress for a photo site. Will see if i can get some pictures uploaded without too much trouble. I know I'm making hard work of it just now :(

Doh, now if you'd gone for tsohost they have a one click installer for wordpress. Literally takes 30 seconds to install and be live!

Good luck getting it running again. Maybe drop vida a support ticket and one of their guys may take pity on you and install it :o)

I've got the front page working now, so thats fine. The problem I have now is incorporating the gallery. I've tried following the guide here http://7879.co.uk/downloads/grace-wordpress-photoblog-theme/ but I think I'm going a bit wrong with the final step for adding the images as I'm not sure exactly what 'post' I'm attaching the image or the featured category to so that it appears in the rotating gallery. Will have to stumble through things a bit more.

Who said this website malarky was easy :D

have you set up permalinks? It says permalinks need to be set up, and out of the box they aren't...

I'm not sure what permalinks it should be cos there are 4 settings, default, day month, numerical and something else. Will need to have a look through the php file to see what it references.

permailinks just changes the address that people see when they click on a link. they won't get a?=436 or similiar at the end, but an actual readable address. I usually use date and month, then you get something that's easier to read, and is easier to remember. Also helps a bit of seo, but it is needed for the gallery to work!

I've changed my theme to a different one but I'm still having the same problems about linking in the images to the rotating gallery on the main page. I'm sure I'm missing something really simple but for the life of me i dont have a clue what it is. :(

Right...activated permalimks? It won't work if you haven't....
Set up a category called Featured? Gotta be spellt right and is case sensitive so make sure it's got a capital "f"
Upload photos to the media library and assign them to Featured category and they should appear! Make sure to clear cache if using any cache plugins, and to clear browser cache too, just in case....

I think I've got it sorted now. I had to trail through some php files and there was a bit on the slideshow. Had to change the filenames to match what was in the php file. Hopefully next time I post it will be a more complete site!

just as a guess what bt was a site that looked almost identical to this?

http://www.fabriccleanersevenoaks.co.uk/

if so they offered me a similar deal and glad i didn't take it. you'll find so many sites that look exactly like that and you actually end up with no extra impact in other towns as they'll be doing this for other sites, plus they don't do any seo off site so it's hardly going to do well against one that has even the smallest amount of offsite seo. you made the right choice not going with them
