Hi, im totally out of touch with internet connectivity hardware (never had wireless or a router or anything), got a really simple (wired) connection at the moment using one of these modems. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-059-LS.

Can someone please advise what I need to set up a wireless connection so the internet can be accessed in a different room at the same time as the "main" pc. Do I still have my wired connection to the pc with a wireless connection elsewhere. Do I/can I utilize the modem ive already got?

Thanks.

That says ADSL2 which is phoneline? I'm not to sure about phoneline if its ethernet i can help :)

Ethernet;

Modem [has 1 ethernet slot] this goes into the LAN or internet slots on your wireless router > this give out wireless, now to use the pc aswell as wireless you need to get an ethernet and plug it into port '1' on the router then into the pc. This then gives the pc internet and the wireless.
[Modem gives to wireless > wireless router has 4 ports which can all share internet so it's felling kind and give one to the pc] this applies to any pc you want from the router just plug an ethernet in like you would the modem and ure away. =]

Hope this helps.

Either replace the modem with an ADSL router, or add something like the Linksys WRT54GL to the modem and you've got the same thing (albeit in two boxes instead of one).

so currently, you're on ADSL and you want to add wireless connectivity.

if so..
get a router with a built in ADSL modem, like this one..

See the back of it here http://www.karoo-user-group.co.uk/resources/hardware_reviews/images/dg834g/back.jpg

The phone line would go into the right hand side socket (instead of your current modem)

You'd connect your current pc up to this with an ethernet cable, and follow the instructions with it to type in your adsl settings.

Setup the wireless, following the instructions

You can now use your pc and any wireless devices on the internet at the same time (with up to 4 connected using ethernet cables)

if you're on cable, then say, and we'll reccomend the WRT54GL instead (setup is a tad different)

Thanks for the replies fellas, (I use an adsl connection by the way).

Right ive quickly done this sketch just so im clear. If these two options are correct, is there a preference?

yes, but you can only do option 1 if it has an ethernet connection -the AM200 does

cheaper just to get the netgear, and less fiddly, especially if it's your first time :) i'm sure toilen will agree

if a mate asked me to setup wireless for him, i'd get that..

it'll be one of those no hassle, 'set and forget' type things :)

will work just fine

Thanks again Bledd. Before I order, is there definitely no significant benefits in getting (say) a Linksys WRT54GL (as suggested above), which I can use with my existing modem.

If both setups do exactly the same thing then obviously I may as well go with the cheaper option. Im just looking at alternative suggestions to try and avoid having a redundant modem, seems a waste if i can utilize it somehow! :)

no significant benefits..

to use a WRT54GL, you'd have to configure the modem, and then the router.

the netgear will be far easier to setup :)

The modem should already be set up and the WRT54GL will have a whole bunch of features (if you install something like Tomato) that the DG834G won't, like bandwidth monitoring.
There's no difference in price between the DG834G and a WRT54GL either.

The WRT54GL is more reliable and has many more features/toys to play with, the Netgear route is simpler to set up and is only one device instead of two. If your a typical OcUK 'tinkerer', go the WRT54GL route :)

Out of interest whats the BT Home Hub? Any good? Im with BT should I consider getting one of these??

A rebadged Thomson Speedtouch. Unless you need something to shoot at, it's not worth it (especially because it'll probably tie you into another 12 month contract).

Think i'll just go for the Netgear, Im not likely to want to tinker with it tbh. I just want to set it up and go. If I get a second hand one should I be looking out for a minimum version?

Minimum version of the Netgear? They should all be much of a muchness.
As already said, the WRT54GL/AM200 combination should be more reliable than a DG834G, especially with altered firmware.

Ok I got a WRT54GL off of mrk in the mm. Ive tried hooking it up and i cant get an internet connection, so i d/c it and set it up as it was but ive lost that connection now too (im posting from my phone). Any advice on how to get this working or things i should try would be most appreciated!

EDIT: Ive got the old connection working now (with just the AM200 modem). Can someone please advise how I add/configure the router.

Hi there mate,

Far as I understand it you have an ADSL modem still? you should still eb ale to connect those to a Cable Wireless router by setting the ADSL modem up specifically to allow connection to a standard router, I as reading comments made by people on the Dlink that replaced the WRT54G because others have used ADSL modems on the D-Link (also a Cable wireless router) which I have pasted below.

You'll need to log into the router to make sure your settings are customised according to your needs (wireless security etc). Log into 192.168.1.1 from a browser widow and use the password "admin" - can leave username blank or just use admin too.

You'll now see the Tomato settings pages to browse through and change settings for. you probably won't need to change most of the settings other than Internet connection settings and wireless if you're connecting via wireless (if this has not already been done of course).

The best link I found to do the ADSL modem on a Cable router is on a review comment made on a compoetitor site by Ed:

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for BT Broadband, 13 Feb 2008
By Ed
After becoming increasingly frustrated by the poor performance of my old D-Link ADSL broadband wireless router, I opted to investigate the current range of routers. Being on the BT broadband ADSL service should have ruled out this D-Link router, but coupled with the LinkSys AM200 ADSL/Ethernet modem, the DIR-655 has proven to be a star performer that has outstripped the old router's performance in leaps and bounds. The DIR-655 is highly configurable and has many very advanced options, making it a suitable candidate for installation in small office/home office situations. It also boasts Gigabit Ethernet support on all LAN ports and the latest WiFi standards. It even does Dynamic DNS registration with all the major offerings on the Internet. All in all a superb choice.

The average BT Broadband user might well disregard this router as it has no built-in ADSL modem, but don't let that deter you. If you're comfortable with a two-unit solution, then this is definitely for you. Simply configure the ADSL modem to perform RFC 1483 bridging and let the router do PPPoE to authenticate with the ISP. It took a few minutes to setup and performs outstandingly with no line drops.

A point worth mentioning is that the installation CD that comes with the router is fine for the novice user, but be aware that on autoplay it automatically changes the IP configuration of your Windows installation to use DHCP, removing any static IP configuration. If you want to configure the router and you are experienced, simply point your browser to the router IP address of 192.168.0.1 and ignore the setup utility.

Highly recommended!

Important bit highlighted in Bold :p

In short what you need to do is tell the modem to use RFC 1483 bidging then log into the router and set the internet connection as PPPoE. I left Tomato installed on the router so the interface will be very different to the stock Linksys firmware but it is there somewhere - just cannot remember where specifically a sit's not a section I ever needed to change anything in!
