Simple Wi Fi Connection?

No problem! post back to confirm if it worked or not, hopefully it works though!

just sent your trust a message, there's a beta firmware for your modem that makes it work.

since you're kinda new to networking, that's why I suggested the netgear instead of this route

but it's not too hard to get setup :)

i'll email you the firmware and will find the thread of how to set it up..

once you've got it, read this whole thread..
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17966642&highlight=am200

(ignore the last guy in that thread. don't know what he's posted..)

no offence meant at all mate :), i've just seen a lot of questions regarding it before

just reply to that other thread if you get stuck

Well, ive spent most of the evening trying to get this sorted, no joy though unfotunately. Im probably just going to see if I can pick up a DG834G cheap and get that set up and running for the time being.

I assume there wont be any problems hooking one of these up and is a much more straight forward option (as Bledd suggested earlier in the thread).

So what's the problem here? It should just be a case of connecting the router's WAN interface to the modem, machines to the router and off you go.

Thats what I was hoping. I upgraded the firmware and tried the settings posted by users in the thread bledd mentioned but it wouldnt have any of it. There's obviously something im missing.

EDIT: One thing I noticed, the tomato firmware wouldnt allow me to change the IP address of the router from 192.168.1.1? Is this correct? This screenshot from the other thread shows the router IP address as 192.168.1.3?? Perhaps tomorrow I'll re-set it all up and get some of my own screenshots to post and see if anyone spots anything wrong.

Just one more thing where do I enter my ISP user details and password? On the modem setup or the router setup?

Right, I set aside some time earlier to get this sorted AND Its working! phew! ;)

Ive got my netbook connected as I speak, great. When I searched for a connection it found 4 or 5, which were secure. Mine was the only one not to be. Whats the next course of action I need to take to secure my connection? I notice theres a password in admin of the router do I simply change that? EDIT: evidently not, this just changes the password to the firmware.

Thanks guys for the help btw, im impressed ive got this far! I think im nearly there! :)

There'll be a tab for wireless encryption. Set it to the highest of WPA2-PSK or WPA-PSK that your hardware supports, enter a strong passphrase (mixed case alphanumeric and symbols) and you're done.

WPA2 Personal = WPA2-PSK. The Enterprise versions use RADIUS/802.11x. Just AES is the better of the three options.

Ok thanks tolien, ive sorted it now!

I set it to:

WPA2 Personal
Encryption: TKIP
Shared Key: *random*

Ive reconnected the netbook using the random key and its connected.

At last its all sorted.

Thanks again everyone for your time/patience!

EDIT: Just one thing ive noticed (although it really doesnt matter) in Network Places I can connect from my netbook to my PC but not vice versa?? When I try to connect to the netbook it says user name and/or password are incorrect, but im sure they are correct??

AES is stronger than TKIP, though I could've sworn AES was a requirement to call it WPA2...

Its connected and says security-enabled wireless network (WPA2) wheras before it said unsecure (or something similar). I'll probably just leave it as it is for now.

It'll say that for WEP too (though obviously won't say WPA2); it doesn't mean you're secure (although the odds of anyone bothering are slim). Considering it's a two second job, it's not a big deal for the extra security.

Ok you're right, ive now changed it to AES (for some reason I thought id have to change the code and re-enter it on the netbook?). Anyway, the netbook d/c and its now (successfully) reconnected.

Cheers tolien.
