Probably a basic problem, hopefully..

I brought a server home from work, it has a fresh install of server 2003 R2.

My network is just a simple 4 port/wireless adsl router which runs dhcp. It has one wired machine with XP pro and a few laptops which connect via wireless all with XP pro. This all runs fine, I can share resources and see all other machines in my workgroup.

Now problem: I wired in the 2003 server box, I have made sure it has the same workgroup as all my other pcs but yet it can't see any of them and they can't see it.

I can remotely connect via ip but not machine name, but I don't understand why I would have a DNS issue? Does 2003 need you set something up to get this working?

Thanks.

well windows 2003 standard edition (not r2) runs fine for me in a workgroup? admittedly my server is running in vmware but i don't see why that matters. and i'm running a similar setup with regards that my pc and virtual server are using my router for dns.... :)

go to the wins tab in tcp/ip properties and enable netbios over tcp/ip on all machines in your workgroup.

Thanks, it was already set to default, same as the xp machines which work fine.

Still I set it to enable netbios over tcp/ip and it still didn't work.

All machines are set to obtain addresses from dhcp, my router.

Checking the router dhcp list at the moment:

IP Address Host Name
192.168.2.2 bill-lap
192.168.2.3 billmain
192.168.2.4 hg5

Bill main being the wired 2003 server, other 2 are laptops.

well from what you have done they should see each other in my network places.

you could just do \\[ip] from start > run

Is the 'Computer Browser' service enabled on all machines?

goto - start > run > services.msc
