Has anybody had any experience of these forums, i'm currently sorting my webspace out finally (after nearly a year lol) and in fantastico, i can have SMF forum (simplemachines) or phBB2. I am inclined to believe phBB2 will run smoother and be more adaptable than the other though being more well known.
Opinions please :)

phpBB, far more customisable, bigger (www.phpbb.com, www.phpbbhacks.com & more), easy to use, easy to edit, thousands of hacks (mods, edits whatever you like to call them), hundreds of templates, practically instant support if you get problems as phpbbhacks.com forums and phpbb.com forums are huge. Handles tons of posts, users and traffic. The biggest forum in the world is run on phpBB (edited a bit and some features got rid of, but it runs well).

that's a nice testament

I got SMF on one of my websites. Once installed (a few minutes) it was a doddle to setup. Themes are easy to install in a couple of clicks. It hasn't broken yet (2 months), then again it doesn't get much traffic.

Can't complain. It runs faithfully and smoothly.

phpbb is full of hacks and updates and hackers trying to break it.

So? That's just because a) it was the best free forum software at the time and b) Lancer is a genius and has optimized it to a barely recognisable form (his thread on the phpBB forums merely touches the surface as far as I can tell)

phpBB is good but it's not the best...SMF has eclipsed it as far as I'm concerned and there's other alternatives like punBB, though I haven't used it much.

That's not quite a hack, it's a bot which is (currently) spamming adverts. Though yeah, it is worth keeping an eye on as it could be used for a huge and massively quick attack

Visual confirmation for the win :p

Not saying it was the best around. Didn't know Gaia was edited SO much .

i'm not expecting any traffic lol, i'm just designing my site to show my photography, i spent a couple of hours setting up phpnuke which intergrates phpBB but an older version, i tried pdating it and it went ghey on me, so i'mjust gonna design my own front page instead :)
