Simply awesome

If the Chevette was so amazing why, in its day, was it left purely to the old people to go shopping in whilst everyone after fun had a Golf GTi, An R5, a 205 GTi or a Lotus Cortina?
That's the thing; it wasn't.

Penski's Chevette puts such a smile on his face he's SORNED it and uses the bus for work!
I now live so close to work I can literally see it from my kitchen window an dI don't appreciate paying parking rates in Newcastle City Centre, ta.

High workload has meant that the last couple of months have not left enough time to enjoy my car so I SORN'd it.

Right now I don't need nor have enough time for my car so it is SORN'd...give it three weeks though... ;)

hopefully Penski may correct me here, but this is my take on things.
what Fox may not under understand is Penski and the other members are not defending the chevette per se, they're defending a sorted out model,
think escort mk2 1.1 against escort mk2 RS2000.based on the pic of Penski's car i'd say that looking at the colour scheme, front apron etc he either has upgraded or is planning to upgrade to HS/HSR spec and if so the handling would then easily superior to that of the BMW....and why wouldn't it? the BMW has to wear a multitude of hats, RS2000's/chevette HSR's are effectively the rally weapons of yesteryear.
the Focus is probably the modern equivalent of the chevette, now imagine if you could spend few hundred pounds and have your 1.6 Focus handle as well as a Focus RS.

Firstly, a 'few hundred pounds' would not turn a Focus 1.6 into a Focus RS.

Secondly, we're not talking about a Chevette HSR, we're talking about a Chevette 1.2 - which has been classed as being more fun than a 330 (although admittedly by someone who's driven neither/doesn't own a car :D).

rule number one, make sure you understand the point the other person is trying to get accross before replying.

"imagine if you could..." does in no way shape or form mean the same thing as "you could...."

secondly the car in question was Penski's which i assumed, possible incorrectly, was modified thus making it differ from the bog standard 1256cc two box family car they were designed to be.

Penski's is the bog standard 1256cc two box family car.

it's the degree of modification i'm unsure about and i did begin my post saying i was open to correction from him.
post#175 is a standard car, penski's is in post #197.
if you feel both cars are identical and therefore both standard may i recommend an eye test.vision express tested mine before christmas for free and the service was excellent.

back to the point in hand i've seen penski mention many times the HSR/RS2000 handling differences and the "alleged" superiority of the vauxhall, add to this the fact we know he's mad on modified cars and it's not unrealistic to expect that a car belonging to him that isn't visually standard also isn't standard under the skin.

Penski posts things that are unusual, I could walk out the door and within 5 minutes I will have seen both of these cars, just waiting for some Vectra pictures now :p
Gotta agree with this 100%. Spent most of yesterday in a 3 series convertible. Whilst it was nice, it isnt exactly exclusive enough to be starting threads about. The 3 series coupe is even more common again.

Errr, yes it is. He's just fitted some different springs or something thats all. It's the 1981 equivilent of an Astra 1.4 lowered on Spax springs :p

Ok then, it's a bog standard 1256cc two box family car with a pink stripe down the side. However much Penski harps on about hte Chevette, his one still has a 1256cc engine in it.

When did I say those cars were identical? I merely said Penski's car is a bog standard 1256cc two box family car - which substantially it is. Gosh, I thought at least my posts were coherent..

can we clarify bog standard please?
if it means "only fitted some modified components" then you're spot on there.

true, but power and handling aren't branches on the same tree.

perfectly coherant.
you said it was bog standard, it clearly isn't as confirmed by fox in the above post.
i see no confusion at all, you were incorrect.

It's spelt 'coherent' :)

Penski's car has new springs, oh and an extra set of headlamps. Didn't realise those mods turned a shopping trolley into a rally beast.

thus making it non-standard? as in "didn't leave the factory like that?"
i'm not so good with the long words so i'll use a shorter one to reply, how about WRONG? ;)

at no point did i say it was a rally beast, i did say the HSR was a rally beast and that he may be planning to upgrade to HSR spec.

It's not bog standard. At all.

I really am loving the kneejerk reactions here... ;)

New springs, new shocks, polybushed, overbored, new cam, new carb, new exhaust, OMFGZCHAV bodykit (HS airdam and a small lip spoiler on the boot)...

...completely bone stock, yeah?

Nobody called it a 'rally beast'

And, for the record, it is being turned into full HS-spec...just not by me.

Not really; it's just the rantings of a BMW owner offended that someone called their car dull ;)

I'm not offended it was called dull in the slightest - I'm a pretty dull person :)

Comparing it to a 20 year old shopping trolley though...
