Can't say I dissagree with you in the slightest, at least unless they can keep the weight well under a ton, and I really don't see than happening.
Hence my OP comment of "apparently seen as..."

Interestingly the tester for this review seems to still prefer the Manta, not sure if I agree with him there but as a road car I can see his point.

Not the worlds best cars though, awesome engine for the aftermarket but far too heavy (the engine, not the car).

Sub 1360kg ... that's alright for a modern car
I love the looks, the photoshopped white one above looks particularly great, not sure why they chose that gash maroon colour for the concept...
Anyway, I agree on the disappointing power output but im fairly certain they will bring this out and then have a turbo version on the market within a year. Doesn't top the 370z for me though, unless its a shed load cheaper.

I would be very surprised if that car ever makes it over here to be honest.
And the reason they will only put a small engine in this car is that Toyota are very wary of emissions across the range, they want to not only achieve the emission targets set but smash them (hence why the Supra probably will not make it over here).

I loved the sound of this when it was announced, such a shame its not got a decent powered engine. Hopefully they'll get a "STi" version out with a turbo and at least 250bhp...

I was thinking about this on the way to work.
I know that it's being co-developed with Subaru, but was that the deciding factor in engine choice? If not, then why not use the 190hp 1.8 that's in the Celica? That would be far more in keeping with it's heritage. Failing that, are they lining up to offer a US version with 140hp and hopefully a Japanese/UK version with a sodding big turbo and well over 200hp?
Lastly, 1360kg really isn't good. I know it's got a roof, but that puts it at 200kg more than an MX5, which is going to be an obvious car to compare it to (both have 2 seats, rwd, similar power outputs and estimated prices).
