How easy is this to do and what smart bulbs would I need? I was thinking a wakeup lamp would be nice, but I'm sure I've read about being able to do it via Google Home. I can see Routines on my Google Home app under Alarms (I use my phone for an alarm, so that makes sense)... Is it just a case of buying some Phillip's Hue bulbs or something? I have a light in the corner of our bedroom that would be perfect for 'modding' to do this during the winter months.

Thanks!

philips hue, hive nest bulbs, pretty much any smart bulb thats dimmable, then set a routine for the light to come on at whatever time starting at 1% brightness say and every minute, maybe less, increase brightness another 1% or so?

Shouldn't they be able to change colour temperature as well to do it 'properly'?

So, next question. What smart bulbs don't need a hub of some sort? Does that exist?

I use a Lifx A60 in the bedroom for this very reason. I've programmed the bulb to change colour and brightness before my alarm goes off

Yes the Hue system requires a Hue hub which is then linked to google home, however you can set the wake-up light in the hue app instead of Google home. I believe hive requires a hub also.

The cheapest way to do this is to get a sonoff WiFi plug download the ewelink app set it up then integrate it with Google home then get any old bulb and set a wake-up routine in the ewelink app. This will then be controlled via voice on top of the routine

Not necessarily. Think you can get different colour temperature ones aswell rather than colour changing ones (more expensive for colour changing ones). The lower the temperature (measured in K's) the more natural looking the light.

a lot of differing opinions on those, including some people saying they always lose connection. Are they the best non-hub bulbs do you think? :)

I had a few connection issues with them, but realised it was the fault of the wireless router.
Since getting myself a 'proper' wireless router they've been trouble free.

Colour & brightness changing does help a lot.

Mine will switch on with it's minimum brightness and start off a dark red. The colour will change through to orange, yellow, white, than through the white colour temps. Plus the brightness will increase.

Can't you just leave your curtain a bit ajar?

This is a heavily "Tech" orientated Forum - If we can't find a way to make the simplest of tasks massively over-complicated with the use of advanced technology then what are we even here for?

:D

Yep, very happy with our Lifx doing the same, and will be picking up more for the rest of the house in the BF sales.

Will also be able to link them to our alarm system for throwing a strobe rave if someone tries to break in :D

Imagine them meeting in real life.

Have my lounge lamp flash different colours when the Ring door bell goes off. Very handy :)

Sunrise was 7.28am this morning according to a quick Google and regardless if that's correct or not it's dark when my alarm goes off. And that's probably late for most people on a working day.

Yeah that's how I imagine it works best.

Thanks for the pointers, well I've chucked them on my Amazon list for now.. hopefully someone buying presents for me this Christmas will pay attention to it. Otherwise it'll be the sales..

You can get an alarm clock called Lumie, which does the same without the need for "dumb" technology. It gently gets brighter in the morning before the alarm sounds, and if you turn the light on when you go to bed, gently gets duller to simulate night fall.
Probably cheaper than all those devices too :-D
