wtf  i had no idea my car did this, part of me thinks wow that's actually pretty neat but another part of me is like what other information is it sending out i don't want to get banned

This has been a feature of BMW Connected Drive for some time. It's quite handy.

Looks like they got the work experience guy to write the email, quality grammar and punctuation there :D

Nice to see they continue the micro-filter ripoff - how can it possibly need changing on a virtually brand new car that's only just due its first service?!

Because it will have either done up to 18k miles or be two years old. They are pretty grubby at that stage, I don't let them do the microfilter and buy my own to fit. Same brand as OEM but total cost is about half of what BMW charge for just for the parts.

BMW's online service price site quotes a price for an oil service without micro-filter but the dealers seem to insist that it's changed at every oil service - can you request they don't do it and still get the stamp?

That's what I do just tell them to leave the filters, they still stamp the book for an oil service. I then keep the receipts for the filters so they show they were replaced at the same time anyway. BMW charge about £56 for the pair of filters if you buy them from them (plus about £60 labour if you get them to fit them), If you get Mahle or Mann carbon filters from a parts shop they are the same as OEM, they even have the brand on them from BMW and they will just be missing the BMW logo next to the brand. I paid £16 each last time I bought some.

6 months old is far to new for an oil service unless the car has done 18-20k miles, If it hasn't done that sort of mileage I would suspect and oil quality sensor is potentially playing up. Even with rubbish journeys lots of stop starts it should go to about 15 months.

Yea it seems to last annoyingly long between services, I don't think I'm going to get one in before my service pack expires :D

The servicing is superb, mine is going in for the brake fluid change next week and a few warranty items before it expires in Dec. Total cost of servicing in three years will have been just over £300. My father in-laws Merc C200k cost over double that in the same time for a petrol 4 pot.

Merc aftermarket costs have always been bonkers, it's amazing how much more money it costs. Are you intending to renew the warranty?

How does Connected Drive work?

I have the app on my mobile and the Y-Cable, and the App is in the menu of the BMW iDrive, but I can't get them to do anything together?

I will do, the car hasn't been in for any warranty work at all yet though, until later this week anyway. The E61 by this stage had been in three or four times.

Didn't realise there was a requirement for Sat Nav! Bit unusual that it is actually displayed on my iDrive if I cannot use it.

Thank you for your internet application for BMW ConnectedDrive.

I regret to inform you that this is not available in your vehicle. This service uses satellite navigation and Bluetooth telephone preparation with Telematics to offer enhanced services, from emergency SOS calls to providing general information on local amenities. As your vehicle has not been fitted with the relevant options, we are unable to set up an account for you.

Meh, Ford Sync can send text messages to your own phone contacts since 2012 in the UK ^_^

OK, its from a list of about 10 pre-defined messages but still :P

Not sure about BMW but the Fords have Bluetooth and use your phone to send and receive messages.

Do these cars have sim cards or something then?
I work in this area quite a lot, BMW are slightly ahead of most car companies with their M2M systems but VAG and JLR are making big strides. BMW use Voda SIMs on all new iDrive cars, older ones have mostly EE (well it was T-Mobile IIRC). The new system is quite fancy and is capable of quite a bit in the background but the majority of users just see the visual side such as traffic, internet, hotspot etc... I understand that it's a big money maker though for servicing / customer relationship building etc...

The new version of emergency SOS system sends your GPS co-ords to the 999 call centre as you connect so if you ever use it they immediately have your position / car details in a bid to get to you quicker. It might send basic info (such as airbags deployed) but I can't remember if this is a now or future feature.

So what happens when the car is sold, or in 10 years time, will the car still text the dealer and the dealer email the keeper?
