Ok I need help deciding which processor to get for my new rig (mine just broke and i want a new one :P). I can't decide between:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00GHz (Socket AM2) (Top One)

And

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4GHz (Socket AM2) (Bottom One)

I Play a lot of game (CoD2, Oblivion etc) but this will mainly be for Uni where i will be doing a lot of 3D rendering etc using 3D Studio Max etc etc doing a Computer Games technology course. What you think?

Also Any ideas for what DDR2 i should get for this?

Thanks

dual core without a doubt, not much increase in gaming but should take burden off when running multiple applications

To start with i've been spending too much time in GD and forgot there was a CPU forum :o so this has been moved.

Also ive done some sums and i can probably afford the 2.4 X2 and get the G Skill 2GB RAM instead of Corsair.

I prefer AMD (fan boy :P) and I understand the Conroe MB's are quite expensive. Im not quilding an entire new system but might as well be (MB, RAM, Processor, and prolly HDD when i can afford). Also I can't stand been on this laptop till Conroe comes out (i get BSOD every time rig boots up and cant pin point the problem and couldn't fix it if i could).

Edit: looking at the price on here it seems the processors themselves aint cheap either :(

Gotta go with dual core I think. It may be slightly slower, though you may not notice the difference, in current games (unless you overclock it :) or go for the 2.4GHz X2) but will be better for multi tasking and any multithreaded software (encoding and future games).

Have to agree with easyrider though, if you need to buy a new MB, RAM and a processor then you should consider conroe.

Just had a browse at a few conroe threads and i must say just looking at the benchmarks etc im already converted, the price def seems worth the extra few quid. I will probably overclock it aswell tbh.

I only have a 400W power supply atm, will thisbe enough to power the conroe with 2GB ra, 1x HDD and a 6600GT (gt only till i can afford better)

why do you prefer amd?

at this moment they make slower processors that cost the same price as the cheapest conroe.

2 weeks ago these very amd cpus were 200 quid more expensive....just shows the profit margin on these chips.

A conroe mobo can be had for 50 quid and people saying i ilke amd is annoying tbh.I dont care who makes them its speed, price and stabilty that counts.

lol

I love AMD and loved my opty 170.
but conroe is faster and cheaper so who cares!

I want speed lol not a badge :D

If you have a pretty decent rig anyway - ie everthing from gpu, psu,hdd etc and have £500 or more to spend then its worth going conroe, otherwise its potentially possible that you will need nearly double that to get a decently balanced base

Dont get me wrong conroe's look great ( hopefully when the full range is finally on sale it will be as oc'able as the review chips) but I have a horrible feeling people might be disappointed if their systems are unbalanced - ie with a really fast cpu, mobo and ram but old gpu etc and people dont forget about a decent PSU - always better to be safe in my opinion

You could probably run this on a 200W PSU (Though I wouldnt recommend it). Conroe is even more power efficient than AMD, and a 400W wont even break a sweat running this rig.
