Hi,

Changed the clutch in my brothers Almera and ever since he is experiencing a single thud in reverse. Selecting the gear is fine it's not until you move or can also recreate the noise by leaving the hand brake on and swiftly bringing the clutch up, dipping again to avoid stalling.

I have double checked all of the engine mounts and they are nice and secure.

I am at a bit of a loss really, I fully removed the driveshafts when working on the car so maybe damaged a UV or CV joint?

I don't know how to test for this though.

Any other ideas appreciated.

What car is it ? FWD or RWD ?

Ignore me it's an Almera & FWD, I am half watching the F1. :o

Check the downpipe is not fouling on something, Sounds like something is fouling when you torque up.

It only happened since you changed the clutch??

Its almost certain then that you have disturbed, misplaced or done somthing to it during the process. Did you fix the friction plate the right way round, did you inspect the release bearing etc?

I'm pretty sure it's not the clutch otherwise it'd occur in all gears?

I know this fault, i've come across it on french and vag cars.

It's your subframe, basically the bolts that support it to the underside of the car have come, well i wouldn't say loose but it's not tight enough it's like a little clunk just as you pull away, does it just the once usually when you start the car after as while.

Tighten those badboys up and the jobs a goodun.

Had a lad here with a golf, he had garages telling him porkies about how it was a gearbox issue, two minutes with a ring spanner sorted it. :)

Your clutch change probably loosened things a bit, probably when you fiddled with the lower engine mount.

Anyway let us know if it sorts it.

No, not nessecarily and the fact it occured after you changed the clutch points directly at that.

How does the clutch operate differently dependent on gear selected?

Will check the subframe mountings although we didn't touch this.
