Sinister tracking device in my new passport..?

I distrust the government. I don't know what's on it, and what it's capable of doing. For all I know, it enables them to pinpoint the location of the passport.

Its the tracking chip in your arm you need to cut out first, Beautiful Mind stylee.

RFID, so someone can steal your details without even stealing your passport.

Shh, the terrorists will here you. Not that it matters as they often lie on their own applications and say they aren't terrorists which makes it a bit hard to flag them up.

RFID is a low power, limited range system. They won't be able to track you or it unless you're within 1-10 metres of a reader.

I'm not so fussed about RFID chips in passports, it's when they're introduced into the products I buy in the supermarket to track my shopping habits I get annoyed.

Besides, isn't having your fingerprints and retina scanned worse than all of this combined?

Yeah could do, depends on what you want your passport for, I can imagine it causing some problems at (as an example) US immigration if they couldn't read the RFID info.
Do you need a new (biometric?) passport to get into America or are the old ones still ok?

Just asking as I'm off there in June and have had my passport quite a few years now but it doesn't expire til 2010 and was wondering if I need to 'upgrade' early.

TIA.

Old ones still OK, mine expires 2009 and went there last year with no problem. I'm off to California end of April so I'll let you know :p

The old ones are still 'machine-readable' although I don't know if there are any changes planned in the future :)

Well yes, the concern is someone can come up behind you, and pick up the data wirelessly.

Passports are often requested specifically by employers, especially for jobs within the permieter of an airport.

That's going to be phased in soon...

Although that would have course prevent the previous scenario of someone coming up and using a reader to counterfeit the details - as their biometric information wouldn't match :)

I thought my dentist put one into one of my teeth. Our microwave beeps every time I walk past and you should hear the scanners at Heathrow.. ;)

What on earth would the government want to track you for?
...
 TERRORIST!

Seriously though, why bother? It renders your expensive passport void and in any situation where that scary chip might be read (customs...) you'd want it to be anyway, and know fully well that it was being read and logged and whatever.
