Sinners

He’s correct tho.

Watched this last night and I very much enjoyed it but the script is all over the place.

They could have easily cut around 40mins of the total run time and have a much tighter better flowing film.

It’s your basic “survive the night horror” but we spent way too much time getting there and not enough time surviving. Felt like they just give up. “**** it just let them in”

This really really could have been amazing but just to drawn out and falls a bit flat.

First 30 mins reminded me of Boardwalk Empire, soundtrack throughout was great. Late with watching it so knew about the 'twist' of it being a vampire film but there was a few little nods that hinted at it like the Indians leaving after chasing a guy to a house for so long because of the sun setting.

Hailee stole any scene she was in.

Agree with above that they could have shaved some of the runtime down, at 2 hours 10 min it does have some scenes that feel dragged out.

Finally watched this. 6/10. Didn't really click with me tbh. Too long, too much boring blues music. I love Hailee and Michael B Jordan, but still didn't really enjoy the film overall.

At no point watching this did I ever think. “Great acting, great directing, this will get nominated for Oscar’s

Thought it was a solid 6.5/10 maybe a 7 at best.

F1 getting nominated for best picture is hilarious as well. Been a lack of genuinely great films this year I guess.

I thought it was a blatant From dusk Till Dawn rip-off, which did it better, was much more fun and provided a good dose of Salma.

My thoughts.

Sinners (on Now TV)

Two notorious brothers return to the US south to recruit old friends and launch their new bar. Set in the 1930s.

Good, albeit in many ways a re-run of themes seen in From Dusk till Dawn, with added themes of African American oppression.

The horror aspects are the least interesting, whereas the idea of music makers throughout history being spiritual guides to the cultures of the time is good, with a great scene of time periods / locations overlapping to show the similarities.

7.5/10 - very fresh in someways, familiar in others.

Notable also for having such a long mid-credits scene that begs the question of why the credits start when they did.

It does seem a lot of nominations, I wasn’t blown away or anything like that.

i agree - 6/10 for me - its not awful, but is at best 'fine' for me.
F1 is even more of a joke for best picture.

Fairly boring survive the night vampire film thats been done a thousand times before, felt like a 20 year old film. The high praise all seems to be a bit political, like we're not allowed to say a bad word against it.

Compared to something like from dusk till dawn, sinners just didnt have anything to keep you watching.

Most nominations ever though, there's got to be something to it.
Thats nuts to me, imo its an ok film (but a poor mans From Dusk til Dawn, which incidently despite being a similar film wasnt nominated for even 1 oscar), but its not even close to being worthy of all those nominations.

My "there's got to be something to it" is entirely there as a willful acceptance that many of those nominations are there for reasons unrelated to the quality of the film. There are some reasons where it clearly is on merit though, this after all, was one of the better films over the last year despite it's similarities to FDtD.

Times we live in. Not much can be done about it as apparently it's 'doing the work', and the craziest thing is this kind of stuff hurts those it aims to assist in the most insidious of ways - if any of those nominations come to a win, then will the winner ever be able to shrug the notion it was done on merit alone?

An okay film with some original ideas in amongst all the stuff we have seen before - but in no way is it worthy of a single Oscar nomination let alone the number it has been granted - presumably for the obvious reasons - not sure what other conclusion can be reached really - thought we had got past all that stuff now. How can you pick up an Oscar in those circumstances and not feel exploited, used and a bit undeserving..

still a better film than F1 though
