I thought I’d read the news wrong when the Oscars list came out, and now the BAFTAs too.

Absolutely baffling.

I was expecting great things based on all the reviews when I originally watched it, but came away feeling I had to be watching the wrong film or something.

It’s not even a superior horror film, it’s bang average. The climax is poor, as is the action and it’s too slow to get going without the payoff to make it worthwhile. To me, it’s got good cinematography and that’s pretty much it.
 
It's not really a horror film. Maybe Gothic horror but it's not supposed to be scary.

IMO people who think it's a 'From Dusk til Dawn' ripoff didn't really get it.

16 Oscar noms is too much though.

I mean theres some darker racism messages in it but...its a very much like "from dusk till dawn"
 
It's bang average and instantly forgettable. Are we all pretending we think it has gathered all the nominations for how good of a film it is on its own?
