Yes you read it right ! Siri on iPhone 4 is few steps away from you. Here's an iOS developer called Steven Troughton-Smith who was managed to port Siri on iPhone 4. He post a demo video showing you Siri on iPhone 4 in action

Might hold off buying the 4S to see how this pans out.

The thing that's going to be difficult/impossible is to get Siri talking with the apple servers.

As i understand the dictation takes place in the cloud, and maybe the base siri commands?

But if it all works out ill be getting it!

Awesome!

But yeah, as said, it uses servers Apple side so i doubt they'd allow iPhone 4's to use it. Which is a tad annoying.

You're probably right, unless the 4 and the 4S are so very similar that they can't stop one without stopping the other ;)

they have different hardware, they'll be able to tell the difference if they want to.

Question is, does the existing version of siri they are using look for it ? :D

It won't be a problem. Yes you can ask it to send information about the device that is sending the information but
1, Apple won't won't to slow down any send and receive between Siri requests as it'll look bad for Apple
2, Whatever information is sent can easily be patched if the phone is jailbroken. Where ever there is a clever boffin, they'll always be a cleverer one around the corner.

You all seem so surprised? was I the only one who knew it was a matter of time?

no, i was expecting this, just not on day of release lol :D
if this works out very well, im willing to pay upto £30 for this, not that they will charge that, just saying
good old devs, without them the iphone just wouldnt be as it is now

Seriously? I'm not sure I'd pay anything for Siri, I see it as a (somewhat fun) perk, hardly a necessity.

yeah, if it works well, im willing to pay for this, these guys need paying for all the stuff they do, without them iphone would just be good ;)

Siri seems pretty crap in the UK atm until they add maps and the other crap thats only available in the US.

Given that Siri came from an app that would run even on a 3GS, it was hardly going to be difficult to 'port' it to the 4, but unless they can hack the device identification or proxy around it, Apple's servers will soon tell it where to get off.

And to whoever suggested that this check would impact performance, please think first. A simple string compare is a whole lot easier than voice recognition (both for processing and data). Jailbreaks can be detected too given that almost all jailbreaks include Cydia. Indeed, Skype already do that.

Reading about that Siri actually went offline a few hours ago due to demand.

Anyone of the notion it's a 4S exclusive now until Apple get the backend up to speed before releasing to 4 customers? 3GS customers can dream on of course :D

What about iPad2 users then? Why Apple think we're not worthy of a personal assistant, I'm not sure. Email to Tim Cook, anyone? :)

(we don't even get Voice Control - thank god!)

iPad 2 will probably get it but not at the cost of preventing people quickly wanting a 4S.. Soon as the hype of buying them goes down the iPad 2 will get it.. Or at least you'd hope it will but by the time they will give the iPad range the feature number 3 will be out.. I'm sure they will support it though after making a big deal its an A5 required feature.

I've just been testing out vlingo app from the app store
And tbh I'm pretty impressed with it
Hopefully Siri will become available but until then should I wish to use a Siri substitute vlingo is spot on
Would be good if it could be incorporated into home button

In the mean time Apple will make loads of money off the 4s, and come christmas / newyear they will release siri to the 4 and ipad 2, I think

Yup, that's the way I see it. It will be exclusive intially to boost sales and essentially perfect and streamline it, then I think it will be moved onto other 'capable' devices - iPhone 4, iPad 2. Well I hope anyway :D
