Hi guys.

My sister was taken in Hospital a few days ago with high BP, she was due anytime to have her baby so they had to induce her, break her waters and give her a caesarian to stop the effects of pre-eclampsia.

She had the baby today and it's perfectly healthy, however she continued to bleed after the caesarian and now we've just found out she needs a blood transfusion straight away.

This sounds awful, but I don't know if I'm just worrying for no reason at all.

Anyone here had a blood transfusion before? Is it normal to have them after an operation like this? :/

Cheers

i would find the info you need from the doctors treating your sister and not here, individual cases are different and you could come away from here more worried than you need to be.

best wishes to sis

quite normal, her haemoglobin levels have dropped probably below 7. a top up is all it is....how ever with anything there are risks. congrats on becoming an uncle.

Yes it is :) my mum had one when she had me.

as long as she's not a Jehovah's witness you've got nothing to worry about :)

It's perfectly normal, my other half is being induced literally as we speak so I'm just waiting for the phone call to go back down there once the waters break/contractions start and she's moved to the labour ward. We were told about bleeding when discussing c-sections and I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. Good luck, just make sure your niece/nephew supports a better football team. :)

Thanks for the re-assuring words guys. I just hope everything is going to be OK. I don't think I'll be getting much sleep tonight.

I've probably had one but (a) I was out at the time and (b) there were more painful things to think about afterwards.

A transfusion is nothing compared to the reason why you're having a transfusion :)

It's not unusual. My mother lost a lot of blood after one of her births and needed a topup. Don't stress about it; doctors take care of this stuff every day. It's purely routine for them.

Congratulations to your sister.

:)

Thanks a lot for the support guys.

Just had a message off my sister saying she's doing well. She was taken back into surgery and they managed to stop the bleeding 'for now'. It may start again but they have some one on standby just incase.

I feel much better now! :)

It's incredibly routine, nothing to worry about at all.

A friend of mine suffered from fibroids and was almost constantly bleeding, I think she drained most of the blood bank with the amount of transfusions she needed!

Best of luck to her!

My wife had a transfusion after both of our kids were born via caesarean, its perfectly normal (or so the surgeon told me).

She has one of the rarer blood types that is the same as mine so i like to think that i played my part in her recovery.

Dont worry mate, its amazing what these people are capable of, and things that seem like a massive deal to us are common practice to them.

My wife had to have a blood transfussion after our first child. Its a scary thought but I think she should be ok. You can lose a lot of blood before you reach the point you are in danger.

With our second child it was worse and she lost 3 litres of blood which is about half the blood in her body maybe more. And amazingly she didnt actually need a blood transfussion for that one. Just iron pills for three months after.

I think everyone is different but I think she should be ok. If you do have any questsions go and speak with the doctor and they will be able to inform you with accurate details.

Best of luck mate anyway.
