Sit ups; a technique question

unfortunately I took notice of someone who told me that the full movement was bad for you and now after about 10 years of doing the small controlled movement I just cannot do the full ones unless I've got a cradle.

Those things always make my back ache
I go for the feet-hooked-under-something technique, is fine with me, and best recreates what I need for RAF selection (they have someone hold feet), with fingers on temples, elbows pointing out in front at all times. One rep is shoulder blades on floor, up to elbows on top of the knees. I managed 43 in a minute last time, and that was after a bleep test and a press up test :)

Hurts me from time to time as well, I just stopped doing them alltogether :/

sorry for the crap image, my paint skills are getting worse. I do situps like this. I don't let my back touch the ground and I position my arms so my left hand is touching my right shoulder and vice versa with my right arm, they are both crossed in front of my chest. I don't feel any discomfort with my lower back and it targets my abs pretty well. Occasionally I would hold a weight against my chest and do some situps.

I have real problems doing any form of sits up due to a bad neck

No matter how I do them and how much I try not to, I always end up tensing my neck and shoulders which then normally leaves me in so much pain I can't do any form of exercise for a couple of days :(

My gym is about to have a referb and the owner says he's getting a machine which may help me be able to work on my tummy without killing my neck
