Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

Size of GPU's.

the terms are interchangable, stop worrying about it and let people be. it's not like we are going to stop calling card's 'gpu's any time soon lol

uneducated or not, it's such a common missuse of the term that it might as well be correct.

If you want the size of Geforce cards, check this link out. Click on the card you want, then the "specifications" tab, the card length in inches is listed if you scroll down a bit.

If you want ATI cards, it requires a bit more hunting - but individual reviews do tell you. Since the lauch of the HD 4000 series, these are the length of the only GPUs to be longer than an ATX motherboard is wide (9.6 inches) are:

4870X2 - 10.5 Inches
5870 - 10.5 Inches
5970 - 12.2 Inches

with the geforce ones, are they generally the same size no matter who the card is made by? Ie if I compared a standard 9800GT with, say for example a Zotac or Gainward 9800GT - would they generally use the same size board?

same applies with ati cards...

Only reason I ask is because I was looking at an Asus Geforce GT220 1Gb card which going by the picture below appears to be a low profile card, and yet with another version of the same card by XFX appears to be a more conventional profile card:

3 different versions, all 1Gb, all PCI-E 16x. Can pick one of these up for about £55, can't say where though...
