We've had new windows and I'm measuring up for new net curtains. The old ones were very old, the wires were screwed into the metal single glazed frames. I'll be using tension rods for the new ones.

The curtain website says measure the width and height of the frame.

Upstairs, our windows all look the same, but there's a few mm difference between them.

1020x960
1030x970
1020x980
1030x970
1020x970

Width is easy, I'll order 1030 width because with ruffed nets, 10mm will make no difference, but what about height?

I could order them all exact, but they'd only get fitted to the correct windows the very first time. Nobody's going to measure curtains when hanging them back again after washing.

If I go 980, despite going round the curtain rod, they'll be too tall for the 960 window.

Order 960 for the lot? It means on the slightly taller windows, they won't quite reach to the window ledge, but the bottoms of these uPVC frames are about 4" tall already so there won't be a gap through to the window.

Am I overthinking this? 1030x960 for the lot?

Ta.

Not had nets for a while and if I remember you times the width of the window as the below example from AI

  • Flat (1x gather): Order the exact width of your window or rod (no folds).
  • Standard/Double (2x gather): Multiply your window width by 2 for standard gentle ripples and privacy.
  • Full/Luxurious (2.5x to 3x gather): Multiply your window width by 2.5 or 3 for deep folds and maximum privacy
Pretty sure we x by 3 on ours.

I'm taking about the height (the drop), not the width.

Width is easy, you specify the actual width and then the amount of gather.

AI fails again.

If you are going to order all in the same length, then you need to go for the longest length to ensure that the longest length has no gap. What you don't want is a gap at the bottom, as this defeats the privacy purpose. Better to be slightly too long than slightly too short. On some windows they won't be perfectly straight, there will be a little bend in them, but it is only 20mm excess so the effect is negligible. However, it would not look as good as perfect length.

I understand that.

But the gap will not be through to the window. No privacy issue, I specifically said that the bottom of the window frames are at least 4" tall so it just means the net will finish an inch or so above the window ledge.

Better that than being too long, surely? Don't want the curtain draping onto the window ledge, that will look awful.

Personally I would go for exact lengths for all, as having a 10mm or 20mm gap, even if just through to window frame, won't look great. I would rather perfect length on all if possible. However, it is only a fairly small gap, so if you can live with it, fine.

Getting them absolutely perfect length is probably quite tricky though.

Go for correct lengths and stitch a small label on the 960/980 ones with the description of which window they're for on the back of the loop that goes round the tension rod so after washing them you know where it goes back to.

A bit, yes. But I'd go with 950 for the height to make sure they don't drag on the sills, plus people are less likely to notice the difference between a 10, 20, 30mm gap than something with gap vs no gap.
