Wife is thinking of getting the above car prob the 1.4 can anyone give an honest opinion of these cars either by owning one or having had some experience of driving one. She will be using it mainly to go to and from work doesnt have to have a lot of boot space as mine covers that..

She is used to driving diesels but has driven in the past petrol is there anything to be gained/lost comparing the 2 models. In addition is there anything of concern to look for when purchasing a used model?

Thanks to anyone who can advise.

I drive a Fabia 1.9 Tdi. Bought it new 3 years ago, almost to the day. Its done 50 000 miles and so far has not put a fault wrong. Its essentially a rebadged VW Polo so its got proven mechanicals/electrics.

The main criticism i'd level is that the boot is a bit small and has a high lip, and not a lot of leg room in the back. Some of the plastics in the cabin are a bit cheap looking, but i guess you could say that about any car.

With the price diffs between petrol and diesel being so wide i'm not sure whether or not a disel will save you much money. Also, equipment level and engine power on entry level models are a bit low.

Can't say I agree on the whole "it's a VW so reliable" part, we've had all sorts of trouble with our Y reg with electrics, parts failing (wipers, washers, power steering, loss of power with throttle, light switching, boot hatch release, fuel line.) I'd try and go for the 1.4 16v rather than the 1.4mpi as the mpi feels sluggish. Now that parts have been fixed it feels good on the road, suppose really the difference between petrol and diesel is you'd need to use some throttle when parking etc.

The 1.4 MPI, is a 1.4 8v which came from the skoda 1.3 Push Rod engine found in the felicia before the fabia. and is very underpowered for a 1.4. Go for the 16V if a 1.4 is a must.

Lets not forget guys, skoda's have been on top for several years for reliability in various surveys that have taken place so I don't know if you could call it "VW Reliability " ;)
