Sky (adsl) should I be getting better speeds?

I’ve had Sky for about a month and the speeds I’m getting now are the same as I had on the first day.

I’m getting approx. 5.2Mbps up and 0.4Mbps down, my predicted speeds were estimated at 7 - 14.3Mbps down and 0.8Mbps up.

The connection is rock solid and the speed does not vary with the time of the day so I don’t think it’s a contention issue.

My router is connected to the master socket, filters are fitted as they should be and it makes no difference whether I connect via Ethernet or wireless.

I’m not very knowledgeable in this area, perhaps one of the gurus on here can advise if I should I be getting better?

Thanks in advance :D

Well you had a reset on the BB connection 37 hours ago
Fairly high attenuation on the downstream and a lowish snr
But your upstream has room for improvement with a 19db snr you should see 800k up
Maybe do a router reboot, see if that helps
failing that you could either e-mail sky (best option in my opinion)or call and ask to have the line retrained or whatever they call it :)
either way i am jealous only getting 3meg and 736 here with a 60 db line

Hi thanks for your post. I rebooted the router 37 hours ago to see if it would improve my sync speed but it made no difference whatsoever. I should have mentioned that in my original post.

The connection is very stable and never drops the line, during the initial training period the uptime was 14 days before I restarted.

I'll give them a call and ask them to retrain the line as you suggested. I was expecting better considering the estimated speed I was given.

Cheers :D

Does seem a little low, I know every line is different, but with my line at a Line Attenuation of 40 and SNR of 6.0, my carp Talktalk router syncs at 10930, meaning I get just over 1200kB/s, almost double yours. That makes it just under 10MB connection. But my estimate for some reason is 4-11, so I'm happy with that.

I have a line attenuation of 56 dB, SNR of 6 and I get a sync rate of 4814 kbps. So yes, I would say there is room for a fair bit of improvement! :)

Try remove the ring wire from all of your sockets in the house, try plug the router into the master socket (if not already), etc.. :)

linky here

I wonder if this is stuck on ADSL and not on the potentially faster ADSL2+

Further to this is this Sky Connect via BT Wholesale or Sky Unlimited

Actually he could well be looking at his upload. ADSL max upload was 448, his is at 413. It would explain as well his downstream of 5945 kbps with an attenuation of 40.5 dB, as back in the days of ADSL that profile sounds about right.

You need to get onto Sky mate! :D

I'd ring sky tbh its on G.DMT like mine, I went back to G.DMT for stability. I have similar downstream to you & got just over 8mb on adsl2+ and 900k on upstream but sadbly my latency with games was hitting 100ms so back to standard ADSL for me. Just give them a ring a nd ask for teh line to be manually profiled to adsl2+ on the gaming profile & you should see an improvement. Try and get them to stay on teh line and try many different profiles till you get teh best speeds.

Hi Guys,

Many thanks to all :)

I think the consensus is I'm not getting the speeds my line is capable of supporting. I didn't think about adsl versus adsl2 I just assumed Sky would put me on adsl2 automatically. I did check my exchange is LLU before subscribing.

I don't think there is anything I can do at my end so I guess the ball is in Sky's court. I'll give then a call later when I get home and mention in partcular that I should be getting adsl2.

Thanks again.....I will report back :D

They should've automatically put you on an ADSL2+ LLU profile. I'm with Sky on an LLU package too. :)

By the looks of it they have accidentally put you on an ADSL (up to 8Mb profile).

Thanks for your input, I wont get the opportunity to call Sky from the landline where the service is provided until tomorrow evening. I have taken onboard the advice and opinions from all posts and will report back :)

While they may say you need to be at home to do any major troubleshooting you can easily call them from any line and give them the number the service is on. They will want to run a line test so actually not calling on the line isn't so bad. They can check the speeds you were quoted and compare that to what you're getting now and restarted the line training again.
