Sky BB and ping times in games

aye its the max delay setting they change , i had to phone them to lower it from 16 to 8 iirc , i pinged uk cod waw + cod 4 server at around 70-80 with sky , now im with be* its 35-45 on the same line :)

Well i,ve got a 8mB / 767 connection with SKY, online gaming no prob's ping 45>70 depending on the sever, my son's play online different game's to CS, WOW, etc. No complaint's from them either.

Still waiting to see a difference in pings :(

How long should it take to alter the max delay ??

Should i kick sky support again ?

Thanks Ben

Do you have any programmes running whilst gaming..ie: Skype, Antivirus ect....as these can affect pings.

130 ping is very bad tbh, i used to get that on dial up back in 2001

How far are you from your local (or not local) telephone exchange?

Change ISP? Be* F.T.W.

Hi,

This is a well known issue with sky bb; check out the following forum post from skyusers:

"If you have poor pings on Sky Broadband" :
http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/gaming-sky/16516-if-you-have-poor-pings-sky-broadband.html

If you pester their support you can get them to reduce the max delay config on the line which reduces ping fairly significantly.

Let us know how it goes :-)

Incidentally at uni I was on be* and they are fantastic - 20ms pings.

That's some might high latency, are you sure your computer/network is clear from spyware / crap running in the background that's sucking up your upstream bandwidth

Try running a tracert to the servers you play on and posting the results back here so we can see where the high latency is cropping in.

Theres the tracert you asked for, what u think to it ?

Thanks Ben

/EDIT

Just been playing on the above server (78.129.146.220) still getting pings of 100-130, lowest i saw was 90 lol

Called Sky again and kicked them about the max delay, got to wait for a call back now can take up to 48 hours.

I've been trying to find a way of getting them via email, I detest call centres, not sure its possible though

Your hitting 50MS latency before you even get out of Sky's network which isnt great, whats even more bizarre is the 30ms increase between Sky and Rapidswitch when I'm positive both peer at LINX (therefore there should only be a couple of ms between them).

My guess is that what ever port your going via (Sky are likely to have more than 1x LINX port) seems pretty congested!

Have you tried many other servers not hosted from within the Rapidswitch network?

Which may be explained by the high max-delay stat on the line. When the poster has pestered support to lower it, from what I've read on skyusers forum, the latency should go down significantly within the sky network. Unfortunately getting through to the appropriate people seems to be a major hassle...

**UPDATE**

Well it seems Sky have at last !! sorted my pings out.

Checked my router stats and "DownStream Connection Speed" changed from 7616 to "8128"

Pinging www.bbc.co.uk from the cmd now gives me between 40-50, lowest i saw was 39. A big improvement from 80ms !!!

COD 4 has altered from pings of 120/130 to around 50 to 60 only played on 1 server so far though, see how its works out on another server.

So i am happy'ish lol big improvement from before but i would leave sky in a shot if i could. Just no one else in the area. I want virgin cable/fibre optic !!! live on a new estate u see.

Right back to COD 4 with my new lower pings lol

This is my only gripe with moving to Sky later next month. BT Broadband give me excellent pings but I dont want to shoot myself in the foot and get buggered with higher pings from Sky.

I will get around 12mb/s with Sky and only recieve 8mb/s with BT. Cheaper also. Oh the decisions :(

if your moving to sky on one of the llu packages it takes 1 call and 5 mins to sort your pings out. Tier1 can actually do it as allot have access to the systems or their managers do. Also their is not tier3 its tier1 and CST. Exactly the same peeps just given more tools. And dont think they are more tech savvy either lol.

Sorry to jump in - I am having real issues with virgin - been chatting with thier tech support for over a week about high pings - I am on fast path but during the evenings get server pings jumping all over the place - what is this "max delays"?

Im on Sky 20mb. It connects the following

Connection Speed
down 10239 kbps
up 966 kbps
Line Attenuation 20.5 db 8.8 db

ping of bbc gets 46ms average
ping of core1.multiplay.co.uk gets 41ms average

Should I contact Sky about the connection speed?
