After supposedly getting a working mac code from BT(might be second time lucky)

I've used BT's landline order checker to see this:

Order reference xxxxxxxx
Placed 10 Apr 2008
Description CHANGE
Appointment No date yet
Date due 22 Apr 2008
Status In progress
Last update 20 Apr 2008
Notes Your order is in progress.

Description Product name Quantity Cost Rental
PROVIDE LLU LINE SHARE PSTN 1 £ 0.0 £ 0.0
PROVIDE PROVIDE SMPF - SMPF EXISTS 1 £ 0.0 £ 0.0

This all means nothing to me, but the appointment date means what?

But does any of this mean I could be on Sky tomorrow? Ditching BT Broadband?

------

And Sky's order tracker says:

Broadband Mid Your order is progressing fine, but we've had a huge response to Sky Broadband, so you may need to wait up to three working days from your estimated activation date before you can start surfing with Sky Broadband. The estimated date is: 22/04/2008

But I've been reading other peoples horror stories, I don't want to be on BT a day longer than tomorrow, what can I do if I still am?

Thanks.

Sky will always advise any new customer to the LLU service of the additional three working days. From what you've said it looks like your activation date is tomorrow 22/04 - though they'll also advise it can take up to midnight on the 22nd for the service to go live.

I've heard the horror stories as well from Sky (and other ISP's) but usually the transition between two ISP's is a smooth process.

I just heard that the transition from BT to Sky can't always go smooth.

I hope for me it does. As i've had enough setbacks already with false mac codes from BT and then then bombarding me with questions and slating Sky as an ISP. When they aren't exactly angels.

My sky to BT went really well once i got a real MAC from BT and BT hadnt cancelled the trasfer once.

One night it just flicked over instantly.

Sky as an ISP have been great as well, UK based tech support (well maybe ireland but english speaking anyway) who will listen to you if you go "off script" Their T3 sortted out my Ping problems for me when me pings jumped form 30ish to 90ish over a weekend.

That and I pay them £10 a month for a service that works great and i can use as much as a want no throttling no limits... pretty much perfect.

When i get round to it im going to call them and get them to take my line rental as well so I can dump BT completely.

My missus is currently nagging me to switch from BT to Sky.

BT charge £15.99 a month for 5Gb and last month we went way over what with PS3 updates and X-Box live stuff plus the usual PC "downloads", they have threatened to charge 30p a gigabyte extra next time. Or we can go to Option 3 which is supposedly unlimited but a whopping £24.99 a month.

Sky appear to be offering 40Gb a month for £5, which is more than enough to cover our usage.

Just wondered what the catch is and why the service is so cheap, compared to BT. Still got a few months left on our BT contract anyway to think about it. However BT need to get real - with all sorts of data now being streamed into peoples homes via the Internet, plus hardware/firmware updates and ultimately the possibility of streaming HD movies only 5Gb is really pathetic, good for surfing not much else.

Well I've been on it for almost two weeks now, so far so good, its sickeningly fast, had the odd drop in connection here and there but I guess with the line training it's to be expected?

If your on LLU with Sky then your line doesn't have a training period - essentially Sky are providing you your broadband through Skys equipment in a BT exchange (LLU)

The line should be automatically configured right from the start - any changes that need made can be done by their Tier3 CST department who would simply log into the exchange and make the adjustments !

Glad your happy with it though :)

My Sky Broadand was a little dodgy for the first couple of weeks but can't fault it since then. Connecting at over 10mbps and no usage restrictions for only an extra £10 a month ontop of the Sky subscription. If you've already got Sky and are in an area that can use Sky BB then its a no brainer imo.

I think the only real reason its so cheap is its a good way to get people to sign up for Sky other than that no catches as far as I'm concerned.

Sat here right now connected at 7.2mb but get around 6mb in speedtests.

Bt would sync at 4.99mb and only run at 3mb on a good day.

Good riddance I say.

SKY BB what sort of pings do you get on some TF2 severs etc, ie is it ok for gamming?

do they block torrents or other ports or have traffic shaping of any sorts? Phenom?

Hi there

As i've mentioned before in previous posts Sky do not traffic shape in any way, they certainly dont block torrents either.

As for gaming - I cant comment on TF2 but on Guild Wars am averaging a ping time of between 80 and 120 and I'm not receiving any lag spikes. However in saying that bear in mind am with Sky as an Off Net customer, which basically means my local exchange isn't unbundled yet :(

Hope this helps?
