Got my first email bill from Sky:

TheBill said:
Date Description Amount (£)
02/05/2014 - 01/06/2014 Sky Broadband Unlimited Pro £12.50
05/04/2014 - 01/05/2014 Sky Broadband Unlimited Pro £11.25
05/04/2014 - 01/05/2014 Sky WiFi £0.00
02/05/2014 - 01/06/2014 Sky WiFi £0.00
02/05/2014 - 01/06/2014 Supplement for not having Sky Talk £5.00
05/04/2014 - 01/05/2014 Supplement for not having Sky Talk £4.50
02/05/2014 - 01/06/2014 Supplement for not having Sky TV £2.50
05/04/2014 - 01/05/2014 Supplement for not having Sky TV £2.25

My phone is with BT and I do not pay to watch TV.

They are trying to charge me for not having their "main" products, stating that I chose to not to have these, so I have to pay for the privledge of not using their other services and this is the bit that has really got my goat.... 50p extra because I pay by Direct Debit..... well **** that!

I would not mind had I actually chosen them as my provider.... :/ I was told that everything would be the same... lies!

After 10 minutes on their live chat, that is it, I am definately leaving.

My options are BT (FTTC) or Virgin, I have been looking at the Virgin 100meg package, which is currently at £25 per month for the first few months then upto £30 on a 12 month, which is not bad imo.

If I go Virgin, will I get any "hidden" charges like Sky are trying?

As Virgin does not need a BT line, when I cancel my Sky contract, will they just disconnect the internet and would my phone line still work? or do I need BT to do something to keep the phone working?

Are there any other provides out there can can provide services similar to BEthere? I am open to suggestions. My line is on the end of the EMBULWE exchange (Bulwell, Nottingham).

All advice greatly received. 8)

You do get discounts for having package deals with virgin but they're pretty clear cut with the just broadband(bb + phone too).

If Sky disconnect your internet because you leave and you didn't specifically downgrade your package just to include phone you'll lose it, including your number, I'm not sure what the migration from Sky > Virgin is like but get in touch with Virgin they might be able to do it all for you

OP wouldn't lose his number if it's with BT.

So they're charging you an extra £14.25 for *not* using their other services! is that right?

Yes, that is correct. Hence my anger..... on top of an interleaved connection.

I have contacted their live chat more times in the last 2 weeks than I did in 5 years with BE.

Actually on a re-read it looks like it's 7.50 a month as April and May is listed which sounds like a bit in advance but there you go. Still not great though. As my clients started getting bumped from Be to Sky, I decided to go to Zen before they migrated me. As myself and my clients are businesses, I didn't feel Sky was a good fit even through I'm sure it's perfectly fine for home use.

I'd ring them up rather than use live chat, you'll probably get a better result.

I just received my first bill through as well, to say i'm foaming at the mouth is an understatement! I was recently transferred from Bethere over to Sky Broadband and I was not told about any of these extra charges through out the process, for not having any other Sky packages.

Am I right in thinking all people transferred from Bethere are not tied into a new contract? I'm very much going to call them up and get my MAC code and move elsewhere, they're having a laugh if they think I'm paying supplement fees for not having any other services with them.

Sky have always had extra charges for not having other services with them, several other ISPs do the same thing - even the beloved Zen will up your service cost if you don't use them for line rental. It's not like this is a sudden change, the letters went out ages ago setting everything out and there's been ample opportunity to either ask more questions or switch before you were migrated.

You're on a 30 day rolling contract so you can walk away whenever you like.

I've just been auto migrated Be>>Sky.

I think you should just look at the total monthly sum you should have been notified about. Those 'extras' should be included.

i.e. My total is £20.40 pm, this includes £10pm discount for 12 months.

One thing I didn't like was them taking a further month in advance.

Auto migrations are NOT subject to 12 month contract.

My cab went live for fibre last week and is showing as such with BT, PlusNet, but not with Sky. Someone said Sky need more hardware in place to enable fibre, anyone throw light on this?

Had same bill myself and they are trying to charge me for not having their tv services even though I've had sky tv for 14 years lol, really need to call them to clarify things but can't be bothered to get angry this weekend
I`m not overly impressed with the broadband to start with but where else is there?.............

come on now. Murdoch only has billions in the bank

There are few alternatives.

FTTC has been "enabled in some areas" here since December but there aren't any upgraded cabs or plans to install any.

The only options are Sky, BT or BT wholsale resellers.

Unless BT or resellers of BT can bring back fastpath and profiling there's no choice but to use Virgin Media. The Usain Bolt ad's alone make any enthusiast want to avoid VM at all costs.

I was migrated Wednesday/Thursday last week. First I knew was the home oh one dying. The letter said it was happening on March 31st.

Call bt to report the phone line as down and come home from work to a working line on Thursday evening. 3 hours of talking to sky agents I have found out that I need to change all the router settings to suit Sky.

It still doesn't work as it's not syncing at the exchange. Another hour on the phone on Friday to try and resolve it and I keep being told they don't support any other routers than Sky's own one hmmm. I can have one but it's a five day wait.

After moaning on the sky forum I eventually get to talk to a BE rep who does more detailed checks because he has actually listened to me and takes on board that I am not syncing with the exchange.
Upshot being their is a fault at the exchange.

So after having spent 4 hours on the phone @5 p per min because I am not a sky talk customer the fault is finally identified.

All the while I have no net and still don't. Still picking up mail on the phone so got the billing one Saturday. That was the final straw. Contract is cancelled and virgin are coming on Thursday to install fibre.

What an absolute farce the whole process has been.

If you were migrates across automatically (without asking for an early migration) you should get a discount for 12 months.. Mine is (and I have confirmed this with CS on the phone, so it better be correct when my first bill comes):

Broadband: £12.50
+ Extra for NOT having phone+tv: £7.50
- Discount £10

All prices are per month.. So broadband Pro for me should cost £10 per month for the first 12 months.. After this is over I need to call them and no doubt there are other deals they can pull out of the bag.. In my book are you silly to be paying full price for both Sky and Virgin.

Also worth remembering.. If you were moved across automatically your contract with Sky is 30 days - dont let them tell you otherwise.

bt & their resellers will let you have fastpath
