We've recently signed up to Sky and our broadband has now been capped at 4MB. Previous to this we've been with both BT and O2 and both managed 11MB which is our true line speed.

Before I sit on hold for 15 minutes to Sky is there anything I can try myself and/or what lingo should I use when I actually get through to someone? I just want to make sure I don't get fobbed off :).

Don't think there is much you can do on your own really.

My Sky line was estimated at between 10-20mb/s but it ended up being something like 6mb/s.

I phoned Sky and they did some line tests, plugged the router into the test socket of the master phone socket and my line speed increased to 12mb/s. Ended up replacing the face plate and after being put onto the 'gaming profile' my line speed now averages 11mb/s and my in-game pings are slightly lower!

Can't fault Sky, didn't try and fob me off but genuinely tried to sort the issue out or increase the speed as best they could.

4mbit is the default setting for DLM on Sky LLU. If this is inside the first few days of joining SKY BB then it needs time to settle. It usually happens in the first few days in the night.

If you've been on with them for a while (more than 10 days) then give them a call.

Sounds like they set your speed at 4mbit and actually forgot to initialise the DLM perrhaps.

Unless your Signal to Noise ratio is at 7 or less then you should be able to go faster. It is conceivable that you may get a slower speed with Sky if o2/BT use a lower SNR default than Sky.

Yes indeed. Not sure about your router but in mine (Netgear DG834GT) you go to Router Stats page and then the Show Statistics button. This'll show you your actual connection speed and Attenuation and things.

Where'd you get 4mbit speed from then if not there?

Yeah I got the speed from the router and their website (I didn't look passed the speed on the router as I didn't know there was anything worth looking at).

Their website even says we should get 10-20:

The two main things you need to find out in the router pages are the Attenuaton and SNR(noise) margin. With those two you can have a good Idea whats going on with the connection.

Not sure what's wrong with it but you have plenty of margin for a good increase from 4mbit.

Sky need to adjust it manually probably. There's no reason why you should be on 4 with those stats.

should see more than that, my stats:

Ring sky mate! They upped the speed for us, went up from 8meg to 13meg :) Also did the same at another premesis and that went from 15 to 19meg.

They are really quite helpful :)

Ask to speak to tier 2 or if you get someone helpful on tier 1 request that they tweak your line "as you think it could be better, given the modem stats" :)

This happened to me (DLM never completed).

That was my line too, and hey presto faster :)

slight hijack, but what do you guys reckon to my stats???

Thats probably as fast as yours will go. The SNR margin is pretty low already and your attenuation is quite high.
