They keep a log. They (and all other ISPs) have been handing over your details to any movie production companies that ask for them for ages. If you have an IP address and proof that it downloaded something that breached copywrite within the last year or so, you can find out who it was.

Then again, you're not actually obliged to pay are you?

Whats the law on this? What happens in an environment where there are multiple people using the same IP address?

Read the article and the input from CAB, the lawyers still need to have the burden of proof an IP address is not enough by my understanding hence why Sky are recommending don't admit anything

Yet to be a test case to set a precedent as far as I am aware.
On the user side there is plausible deniability due to open access/multiple users.
On the copyright side they will go after the contract holder, I.e the subscriber to the ISP.

Of course not. The ISPs are oblidged to hand over your details if ordered, and are oblidged to write to affected uses to tell them they have handed over their details. You can then ask for the details and evidence, at which point they will tell you what you are accused of downloading and when.

But after that its up to the claiming company to prove that you did, and without inspecting your hard drive they can't, as the IP address just identifies an internet end point, not an individual. The letters are just designed to scare people into paying.

Format your drive and reload Windows. Fill it full of viruses/spyware and remove wifi password then proceed to claim you have no idea about computers and let them spend the money examining your drives. Hope they catch another kind of virus whilst they're at it.

Come at me bro (or not :D).

They have no idea who was connected to your wireless network.

Dear Golden Eye

Thank you for your recent letter regarding copyright infringement.

I have not downloaded the media in question, however, my wifi is unsecured so that friends, family and neighbours can use my network at thier convenience when visiting me

I can provide you with the names of all 98 visitors I believe have vistied me on or around the date you have specified, should you wish to write to them asking if they have downloaded said material. Unfortunately, I do not know most of thier addresses.

Many regards

Not a porn downloader.
