Sky fibre with TP-Link TD-W9980

I'm not desperate for the extra bit, just wondering why it was less that original. it's crept up slightly today, current rate 61,546 from 62,276.

Will leave it alone for now as it's solid so far. Will keep the reset in mind if it greatly changes! thanks

still dropping in speeds.

down to 58/14 now from 61/20 last week. No disconnects, no resets from me etc.

I got the TP-LINK W9980 to work with Sky Fibre!

Thought I may share this as it may help someone in the future. I got the TP-Link W9980 working with Sky Fibre and this is how I did it. I was using the SR102 previously.

You will need the firmware from this URL: https://www.dropbox.com/s/24lc8mv7g..._up_boot(150413)_2015-04-13_09.06.50.zip?dl=0

Update the W9980 firmware by going to System Tools->Firmware Upgrade and follow the onscreen instructions. The router will reboot and you'll be ready to follow the instructions below.

1. Get the username and password that your Sky router uses. You can use this link or just google how to get your sky username and password from the Sky router.

2. Login to the admin page of the W9980 and go to "Quick Setup".
a. Set region and timezone to United Kingdom and GMT respectively.
b. Select "xDSL Modem Router Mode".
c. From the list of ISPs, select "others".
d. Set the "L2 Interface Type" to VDSL, enable VLAN ID and set the VID to 101.
e. Select "Dynamic IP"
f. Continue all the way until you've set up your wireless settings and complete the quick setup.

3. Go to Network->WAN Settings and click on "Edit."
a. Click on "Enable MER" and enter your Sky username and password. Once done, click on "Save".
b. The connection should start working automatically, if not, click on "Connect".

Your W9980 should now be connected to Sky. if not, check your username and password!

Please don't just download a firmware file from Dropbox and flash it into your router without any confirmation of where it came from and having a checksum to compare it to.

Thanks for the walk through, finally set up my TD W9980. It was a bit of a mare though, after installing the linked firmware, I couldn't access the Web setup via lan. I ended up phoning tplink, who suggested wifi to get there. Did that and managed to set up the router with sky fibre. Strangely after access in the router setup once via wifi, it now works on the cabled connection! It's much faster than the sky hub 2, but I'm having wifi drop outs from time to time.
Does anyone know if the later firmwares have mer? And work with sky fibre? I'm assuming that since its beta software, it's likely buggy.
Any tips to improve the wifi? I've changed the channel to 9, that's what the sky hub used and tended to be stable.

For 2.4GHz Wifi you want to be using channel 1, 6 or 11 if you're in the UK.

You want to be using whichever is furthest away from your neighbours are using to avoid any interference e.g. if everyone is on 6 and 11 use 1, or if everyone is on 1 and 6 then use 11 etc.

Have a go using WifiInfoview to see what channels are currently being used in your area.

Hi guys

Just wondering how you're all getting on with the W9980?

I really need to replace this horrid SR102, but not sure which router to go with. Are you all getting same/better line speeds as the SR102?

Cheers :)

If you can wait a little longer then the VR200/900 is supposed to be getting MER shortly, other than that Billion or Netgear get mainly positive reviews.

Personally I went with an ECI /r or HG612 + a decent router, in my case the CPU/RAM/ROm was more important as I knew I wanted to do an encrypted VPN AP for a two box solution, if you have any desire to run 3rd party firmware on your router running a dedicated VPN AP instance at the router level. Added advantage is my connection is rock solid and even if I reboot the router 50 times a day my profile isn't affected.

I've just replaced an SR101 with the TP Link W9980. Followed the instructions above and everything works great. Wireless coverage is far superior - I live in a house with stone walls and before the change I couldn't get a wireless signal in my living room (router is upstairs to the rear of the property due to the location of the master socket) - now my laptop connects at ~90mbps. Also I was running three devices before (BT modem, Sky router and gigabit switch) whereas now I only need one. I do wish TP Link would release proper (non-beta) firmware that will work with MERS though.

Ignore the word BETA and you'll be fine. Basically Sky decided they wanted everything to run on it's own twist on MER. It's not true MER and as such it's non standard. Sky then decided to do a U turn on it's ADSL offerings but left it's non standard MER implementation for the VDSL products, they complicated things still further by allowing 3rd party equipment on Pro. The upshot is most OEM's didn't' bother to support it, then users pushed for it, it got added to the 3rd party firmware's and then other OEM's started to include it as it's only DHCP 60/61. Sooner or later it'll come out of BETA but in all honesty it works, so who cares what they call it.

1, 6 or 13

people recomend 1 ,6 or 11 as they dont have the option of 13 in the us

I can't seem to install the MER supporting beta firmware on my TD-W9980 - it has the latest official firmware which doesn't appear to have MER support. Does anyone know what to do here?

Channel 14 is Japan only.

Channels 1, 6 and 11 are recommended because they don't overlap.

In the UK and other areas there are other combinations that would work (including, but not limited to, 1, 6 and 13). This is fine but ***** all over everyone else who sticks to the norms (including the majority those who just leave their ISP supplied router on auto).
