Sky: Gone over your monthly bandwidth allowance...

Seriously guys - the patching is NOT an issue here.

Maybe it should be, if the machine is unpatched.

I know exactly what I need and don't need to do with regards my mums machine and having the thing download patches when she knows so little about the thing is not a good idea.

I doubt that, and yes it is a good idea. Even more so if she is computer illiterate as you seem to suggest. One accidental click and there comes an exploit being used, especially since you seem to think this magically keeps it fully secure:

Her machine is locked down and the combination of AV and UAC in place - and the places she visits, the fact her Windows doesn't update is of no consequence.

The issue is that there is no way that 2GB has been used for the amount of web browsing and email she sends/receives.
Monitor now installed

Where is this monitor installed? Her laptop/PC? That's no use and I doubt sky will care. You'e not monitoring:

- Smart phones
- Tablets
- People on the WIFI, even if you think it's secured

Realistically you're only hope here is to ask sky for a breakdown

- GP

Surely the router has a log of upload and download you could check?

Alternatively, check the web history and see if theres any video or similar sites she's been on, if like my Mum she knows so little she may have gone onto one and not even really realised.

You might want to be very cautious checking her browser history, what has been seen...

I am doubting the security aspect, no system is 100% secure period (even if it is a MAC blessed personally by steve jobs)

The next best thing is to ask Sky for a specific time or day log of the usage or if you have monitoring in place would be to check that alongside the browsing history.

It is important to note that one log file is not enough to prove anything on the computer, it would have to be on the router or router level to dispute internet usage. I.e. wireless and ethernet would need to be monitored.

My parents were on the Sky 2gb limit, I could see their usage when logging into their account and shows how much of their 2gb limit was used.
