SKY HDTV Demo Clips

I realise that but whats going round everywhere is that the box will cost £300-400 thats what I dont understand because you could get a pc capable of decoding hd for less than that.

I suppose a lot of the bit are pretty much the same in terms of Hard disk, remote control, tuner(s).

The differences are the decoding hardware, multiple video and audio conversion functions, TV scalers, HD I/O (which isnt cheap at the moment), robust operating system (imagine a set top box having the boot time of Win XP!), application code.

So theres a lot that goes in there to justify why the box might be in that order of price. But as the decoder silicon and the HD scaler chips & I/O becomes more readily available, the box price will drop quite a bit.

Also computers are not what i'd call 'consumer compatible' yet. Even a PC with Windows Media Center leaves a lot to be desired in terms of point and click usability. Anyone whos used a sky plus box will know what usability is about and PCs just dont deliver that level of ease of use and robustness bacuase they are trying to do many different things rather than one thing really well.

The sky HD box aint gunna be cheap as its got a 300GB hard drive so if sky sold them for less than about 70quid it would be worth buying just to rob the harddrive. :D

So when I pick up my LCD tonight, I can just connect it via DVI, then play Media Player on my PC and select it to play fullscreen?

Sounds easy enough :p

Are the videos jerky for anyone else? Ideas?

Thats would be a classic example of not enough grunt to decode them properly. Can you tell us what cpu / gfx card / ram / Hard disk combo u have?

If its not that, i have no idea, they ar eencoded at 24 frames per second and are nice and smooth.

They are jerky for me If I use a program like vlc to play them instead of wmp10. Otherwise its just that your cpu aint upto the task :p

Ummm...
AMD 3500, 1GB Corsair XMS RAM, X800XT PE, Western Digital 200gb drive. That's why I'm confused! :(

Quick thought, if you're watching the lions rugby one, the opening sequence in the rain is a slow mo so it does look rather jerky.

If therest are bad aaswell, u got me. my pc setup is about the same as yours. tried playback in media player classic, vlc, winamp and Windows media player, all look good.

well i have to say the rugby clip from sky hd is fantastic and shows the potential that can be had with this improved format. :D

Also looks amazing on my 50" HDTV via my htpc. (Although it has pushed my htpc to the limits so think its time for an upgrade).

Hi guys
Just like to show you this page : http://varied.myby.co.uk/dtt/
It shows the bit rate of freeview channels, which are mpeg2

It also indicates that some are 720*576 is this the res that sky are going to broadcast in, if so, apart from the bit rate is there any reason why hd whether from sky or tw is going to be better.

thanks

The channels that are in 720x576 are non hd channels, sky hd broadcasts in 1280x720.
