sky locked account

Sky have locked my account with no warning. I called them and first they refused to say anything but call my bank, now they say it's locked pending investigation. They refuse to say anything else.

Anyone ever had similar? Nothing weird has happened with the account lately.

Are we talking about your Sky ID being locked or your bank account or what?

My Sky account. After a lot of arsing about I think we've figured it out. I used a family members details to pay one month, it was so long ago I don't remember if I'm the one that messed up or they did. They ended up putting a Direct Debit on that bank account and it's been paid out from there every month for ages, neither me or the other family member noticed (this part is entirely our fault) until now.

This family member noticed the other day and called the bank saying they'd never given Sky permission to do this etc. They now have the money they've been paying (to the tune of £500ish) but as a result it's kicked off all the fraud detection and I assume they'll ask for the money at some point. Edit: At this point the family member did not realize it was my account they were paying for, otherwise we would have just changed the details and sorted the money between ourselves.

All this is perfectly understandable now, the biggest problem is Sky cut me off from everything with no warning, no contact and refused to tell me a single thing.

Apparently it's going to be cut off for two weeks at a minimum. :(

Don't see how Sky are to blame here. You messed up billing and when somebody calls Sky to basically say "You're taking money from me, I never setup an account" then yes of course it's going to set off fraud alarms and yes the account is going to be suspended - especially if the person who has been paying is demanding refunds from Sky etc.

The problem was the utter lack of any information whatsoever. I understand they can't give out information to potential fraudsters but being actively hostile while talking to the account holder is just crappy. I'm well aware this could all have been avoided, and of course they want the money back. The problem is I have to wait two weeks for them to realize that, start chasing me and pay it back.

Now I actually know what's going on, there's no real problem other than me being without internet for a few weeks, I'm sure I can survive. God forbid it might push me to go out and see other humans.

Edit: Also, we don't know that I messed up, I said it was long enough ago I don't remember. It's possible I did, it's just as possible the person on the phone messed up too.

Of course if they tell you, the 'fraudster' then if you are a genuine fraudster you're going to do a runner and potentially evade arrest if it gets that far?

Not really. Sky didn't get the other person's bank details by magic did they?

If you was using another family member's bank to pay a single month, you'd of done that by card over the phone, which would've kept your existing DD in place. If you supplied them the bank details, that would've setup a new Direct Debit, obviously overwriting your existing bank details.

I was having bank problems so didn't have a DD on the Sky account. That's why I used different card details on the phone, specifically for one month so they wouldn't shut it down. I honestly don't know if there's a way the bloke could have mistaken it for me wanting to put a DD on the different card but if not then yes, I messed up somehow. I'm not looking to pass the blame, if I screwed up then I screwed up.

I agree completely, they can't give anything away. Look at it from my point of view though, I get home from work, call Sky and they say 'your account is locked, you're being investigated for fraud, kthanxbai!' and then hang up (they may as well have done!). It's a bit disconcerting. :)

They said something about the account being dead and having to make a new one, so it would be interesting to see if I'm liable for the remainder of the term ifI tell them no.

Well this is close now to being sorted. They've put a new order through as they need to set it up brand new, and it's going to be yet another two weeks. I think I scared the guy into giving me 12 months fibre unlimited for £5/month. Don't think I've ever been so angry on the phone but leaving a paying customer with no service and no contact for weeks is disgusting. I'd not have minded an email, even one saying 'we're investigating this account for fraudulent activity'.

And it turns out I never owed any money. The bank gave it to my family member but didn't take it from Sky. Guy I just spoke to said he's not heard of the issue in 6 years working there so it was obviously a weird case no-one wanted to touch with a bargepole. :D

A paying customer? You weren't paying :p

As for Sky being paid by the bank and the bank refunding your friend, that'll likely be under the DD guarantee. It's likely it will be investigated further I would think.

Ha yeah I guess I wasn't! :D

It was my mum's bank account (mommy! :(), so she's been in touch and they took back the money that they refunded her. That's what makes it more frustrating though, sky were never really inconvenienced or out of pocket as far as I know. Fair enough they had to shut me down but they coulda said 'hey are you a fraud?'. :o

Anyway I'm kind of hoping I can't be put on some kind of list just yet as I do work in finance, if only as admin.

Plot twist, I'm that blackrock guy that also fiddled his train fare.
:D

You do realize your Mum has been paid back the money under the DD Terms ? That being the case, i would imagine you have a much bigger problem now than you would or will ever have with Sky. Because her bank will now be coming after you for it's money back..............................they don't ever give up........................got to keep the bankers in the manner they have become accustomed to.

Yes they took the money already, in strange increments of £60ish at a time even though the money was never touched by us. We contacted them the moment we noticed, I was never looking for gain. Just my internet connection back. :)

So the saga continues. Sky's compliance have cancelled the TV order again with no explanation, yet the fibre order still stands. Told them if I hear nothing by the end of the day I'm cancelling completely, this is beyond a joke now. I was told the problems were all fixed.

Happy new year :)
erf :( sorry to hear dude
Yeah if there's this kind of hassle trying to order something I'd just request full cancellation and go elsewhere tbh

Yeah the problem is I don't know if they have my line tied up or anything. Last time I tried ordering with BT I had a months trouble over a simple wrong letter in my postcode, god knows how they'd handle this.:D

Happy new year also.:)
