Hi all

Last week I upgraded from sky adsl unlimited to the fibre max with a new sky q router. I was using a very old sagem router before which seemed to need a reboot every week but worked in between, but for the last month swapped to a D6400 Netgear I had spare which worked fine.

Over the weekend just gone with the sky q router the wifi has been terrible, devices just stopping working even though they show wifi connected, slower speeds and just generally flaky performance. Putting them into airplane mode and back out seems to get them back working straight away but they should all just be working regardless.

I've now turned off the wifi on the sky q router and added back the D6400 Netgear in AP mode and got it all working ok so far. Wifi seems better and pretty much back to how it was for the last month. So it definitely seems it the sky q router with useless wifi built in.

The problem I now have is that we've also done a similar upgrade for my father in law moving from BT infinity to Sky Fibre and he's also got the same sky q router having the same wifi issues. From what I've found out with the D6400 it seems a new AP needs purchasing for him to get it working reliably so the question is really which one?

Netgear do the WAC120 802.11ac which I've actually used before which is about £65 and seems the natural choice, but they also have the WAC104 also 802.11ac for the same money, but does anyone else have any better options?

Thanks

I've seen a load of these around, are they just the same as throwing an ethernet in the back from the sky router and then setting up the wifi on it? One problem I've got is price, seeing as it's me who suggested moving him to sky I've got to 'fix' it now as it's not working so I'm footing the bill for the new AP. However if there is a better option I'll probably end up swapping the D6400 I've got at home also.

Yes, but it needs POE, so via POE switch or cable and injector.

They are well worth the money IMO. WOuldn't be without mine now.

Right, not sure if thats going to be possible then, I'm already 'in trouble' for it not working with just the sky q router, not that it's my fault that sky can't produce something that works of course, but having to buy a PoE switch to sit with the sky router and then another AP as well I can see being 'too complicated' for him. I'll see... thanks.

Sorry to jump in here but I've got a similar situation..

Why does it need POE?

And then if I wanted to replace Sky's wifi with 3rd party I'd need the sky hub plugged into a POE switch and then into whatever AP I wanted?

And then I guess if I wanted powerline/wired after that would I be connecting to the upgraded AP or the Sky Q box?

Basically I accept that I have to use their modem.. the rest I think I want to replace...

ubiquiti APs use POE to get their power.
Lucky for you though they include a POE injector in the box, so all you need is a couple of Ethernet cables to get it working.

One thing to bear in mind is that, It doesn't have a web interface as such, it needs controller software installing on a computer (which is then accessed via a web browser), just worth mentioning as although this is a minor niggle for me it does bug me sometimes when I want to adjust a setting, I used to be able to do it from, my phone/tablet/laptop/pc/work laptop
Now I am tied to one device (unless I want to shell out for a cloud key controller)

The above being said, I honestly wouldn't be without mine now, covers my entire house, no issues, where I was using an Asus modem/router as a 2nd AP before and still the coverage is better now.

Still not sure why its your fault by the way ?
Can you not just plug his old BT router in and configure that as an AP if that was working ok ?, can even change the SSID to match the sky router if needed.
