*** Sky Q Thread ***

I've just moved to Sky telephone and BB from BT, and also upgraded to Sky Q. Saved me around £22 per month (top BB package). If you compare it to what I what I would have been paying without Sky Q but having still moved phone and BB, adding Sky Q has cost £3 per month more. Obviously there is the cost of the box, but it seems soooooo much better, plus it stays Sky property so don't need to worry about problems with it.

Am really looking forward forward to it, seems a very forward thinking product, linking Sky and all of the on demand stuff in a much more integrated way.

So let me get this straight, you are complaining about it costing you potentially £30 per month, of which half that goes to Sky?

Not complaining really because it's up to me whether I choose to pay it or not, merely making the point that the 'revolution' is going to end up costing a lot of people more money if they want to watch everything worth watching.

What amazing selection of movie channels and exclusive TV shows do you get for that £15 that goes to Sky? Don't bother including any free to air channels, or content that is duplicated on the other services. A couple of shows on Sky Atlantic, and a few things on Sky 1?

Plus Sky Living, Fox, SyFy, Universal, Watch, Alibi and TCM. Don't try to suggest that I'm allowing myself to get ripped off; £15 is a great price for the amount of new TV shows I get to watch. Certainly better value to me than the combined price of Amazon Prime and Netflix would be.

Content, oh and its already happening, look at what just happened at Sundance, Amazon and Netflix pulled the rug from under the other studios. Here's a nice big number for you $6 billion, that's how much Netflix will be spending on content this year, all of which will be included in your £7.49.

Which is great, as I said. I've nothing against these services, I just find it odd that people think Sky's business model is on its knees and that it's great for everyone that its happening.

Also, why would I think physical media would die? Nothing compares to the quality of a blu-ray at high bit-rate with HD audio, I'm failing too see the comparison to TV channels however. TV will change, it won't vanish but maybe of the back of it there will be a lot less tosh, fewer channels with higher quality. I mean unless you still watch video tapes, right?

I likened you to them because you seem convinced Sky and broadcast TV is a dinosaur when people's viewing habits clearly indicate otherwise. People are using streaming services in addition to the existing methods of watching TV, which is largely why Sky is changing their product to fit in with that new style of usage.

Your reasoning to me seems fine, and I'm not about to argue with what you find is good value for money, as that is very different for everyone.

I guess truly only time will tell what will be the new de facto way to consume content, and right now that is moving in to flux, will Sky be coming out the other-side full of shining stars, or a murky light polluted mess.

People have been saying streaming is the way forward for about five years now. In that time Sky have gained about two million customers. Netflix and Amazon video have had to invest in their own content because everything they had previously was bought in, older content. And their own content also means they can licence it around the world. It will be interesting to see if as many people keep paying Netflix if they go through with their decision to block VPN and proxy access to other countries.

Anyway, you can get a huge amount of content without a subscription with Sky through NowTV. And the content is, IMO, better than what's available elsewhere if you take away Original content. Of which Sky has quite a lot as well. 95% of the top grossing movies in the last twelve months will be on Sky services first.

Been flying out the door the last two days..

I would say I have saved money for 50% of my customers. I'm happy, their happy, everyones happy :)

How can you be saving people money? I presume they're people that are paying horrifically OTT prices before? Are you including the large up-front payment in that? Knock £5 off the bill but pay £200 up front :p

People with 2 or more multi screen boxes, monthly payment has worked out cheaper. Ok, we have a upfront cost, but the savings are usually negating that after 13 months.

I can't see the benefit yet, the gui looks messy to me compared to the sky hd one and I can already watch my recordings in any room via a hdmi splitter.

The hd content is still lacking I'd hate to think how little 4K there will be.

A lot of the HD content is out with sky's control.

Also, and unconfirmed 'water cooler' talk but I've heard rumours that the UHD content my start with three channels, Sports, Movies and Entertainment. Again unconfirmed rumour.

Can`t believe i would loose my 60% discount if i upgrade to Sky Q , thats really bad to think ive been a sky customer for 6 years and no discounts on Sky Q
This has really put my off upgrading now , and to think my sky cost will go up to £88 per month , also no extra HD channels and you don`t even get full HD with sky

Do we know if the redesigned planner will be similar to the demoed skyQ one?

The next EPG for the Sky+ HD STB won't have a look and feel like the Sky Q EPG.

There are some features being added, but more on those when it goes live.

Those involved in the beta testing aren't allowed to discuss them and things can and do change, even at this stage.

It wont look like the SkyQ EPG, Sky wouldn't do anything to jeopardize sales. Well, except charge ridiculous up front costs and yet again making it more expensive for existing customers to upgrade.

duh.

+ you don`t get any extra HD channels ect , you have to mad to upgrade to Sky Q , can`t believe i would loose my 60% discount if i wanted to upgrade to Sky Q

Until Sky put the price up...;)

Think they're more likely to push the price up of the existing packages and start removing discounts when they run their course and not offer anything in place of existing discounts.

At the moment we're paying £69 for everything and Sky Q would cost £88. Without our current discounts which run out in October, we would be paying £92 so if we don't upgrade to Sky Q when it comes to non Sky BB customers I highly doubt they will allow us to stay anywhere near £69 a month.

Baically they can start forcing people to take Q or jump ship when their existing contracts draw to a close.
