*** Sky Q Thread ***

So a few days to launch.

2160P @ 50Hz 10-bit....

I can confirm the UHD pic is blisteringly good.

You mean when playing UHD content or the upscaling?

How well does it upscale HD content? I'm concerned by this as my TV does a very good job of this and I'm worried the Sky box won't be as good when set to 2160p output, which would be very annoying.

Just checked what it'd cost me to get Sky Q. An additional £56 or something a month. I laughed.

Assuming you mean as an upgrade from Sky+HD, then the only way it'd cost that much more is if you have a hefty discount on your current package, which is hardly directly comparable.

I have 60% off. And of course it's comparable, because 50 and 60 % off deals are easy to come by, by playing the cancelling game. Unless I can get the same discount with Sky Q then it's really a very expensive way to watch TV compared to how I do it now.

Indeed, same issue here. I wouldn't mind upgrading but the cost difference is pretty ludicrous for something as basic as a TV subscription.

Now my Sky has finally gone I had a look how much Sky Q is for new customers and their website shows a minimum of £44 per month or £56 per month for the Silver package with UHD.
Sky HD still showing as £20 minimum per month.
Do you reckon eventually they will phase out Sky HD for new customers and then the new minimum becomes £44 per month.
That would be a sneaky way to drive up the price?

(35% discount is still what I would be offered to return on my old package)

They may both allow you to watch Sky but they're still different products and one is brand new so isn't being offered at a discount yet.

Of course I understand what you're saying about the difference but, given that you're getting a 60% discount, why are you surprised? Did you really expect them to offer you their shiny new product at the same 60% discount rate?

It's like buying a car when the new model has just come out. The dealer offers you the old model, which is still new, at a hefty discount to shift the stock. They both perform the same function but, if you want the new shiny then you're going to pay more.

Sky Q is the future. Sky+HD is the past. The former will eventually replace the latter completely, that's Sky's long term plan.

EDIT: Oh and the £20/£44 isn't a valid comparison at all as Q doesn't offer any channel bundle options but rather comes with the equivalent of the Family HD bundle as standard, which is £38 on Sky+, so a £6 difference.

Sky customer for 12+ years, was paying £44/month for the legacy sky hd variety pack with F1 channels but no multiroom. Phoned up threatened to cancel and move to BT, was offered £44 a month for Sky Q silver, with £60 install fee and no other upfront fees so snatched it up. Tried to go for FTTC through Sky too, but was offered no decent discounts, £20 a month + £14.99 line rental, so went with BT for it instead as it worked out £5 a month cheaper and got £110 cashback offer too.

So they offered to reduce £44->£20 which must be something like a %30-40 drop in the scheme of things, and you don't think that's OK?

And as regards BT? Surely you've lost the Sky channels and Sky F1 HD channel to?

You misunderstood me, I went with Sky Q Silver at £44 a month. I was never offered a reduction from £44 to £20, the £20/month I mentioned was their offer for FTTC. I then went with BT for FTTC at £29.95 a month inc line rental with £110 cashback, compared to Sky's offer of £34.99 a month inc line rental.

Ahhh! That's a nice mix & match :)

Yeah, it's actually same as what I pay just now for standard Sky HD with one box, and ADSL2, so nice upgrade all round. The nice part of moving FTTC to BT too is that the speeds are up to 55 Mbps, should get somewhere in the 40's as I'm pretty close to the exchange.

But in a years time (when deals run out), you might have to swap/change/negotiate again!?

Hurry up with the new firmware!

Which one? :D

There is the Sky+ HD EPG that started to roll out from this morning. All being well, the Sky Q boxes should receive an update tonight.

In the mean time the SR102 and Q Hub are also getting a firmware update at this time too.
