Sky Replacement Router

Hi,

I'm looking at switching my services back to Sky from BT as BT have messed me around a lot over the last few weeks (non-broadband related but the best deals all come if you take the full package).

I've never been hugely impressed with BT's Home Hub and from what I gather Sky's is even worse (not even Gigabit!) so if I do switch I'd want to get a replacement.

Any suggestions on something with Gigabit ports and half-decent wifi? Only got a TV and phones connected via Wi-fi and the TV's about 3m away in the next room (still found the BT HH5 drops out too often though).

Thanks!

The speed of the router's LAN ports makes zero difference if you use a gigabit switch, the connection won't ever exceed 100mbit on that hardware (technical limit of VDSL spec) so it's only LAN based transfers that would suffer.

Before you go and buy anything use Quidco or ask MissChief politely about the friends/family offers if you qualify.

You have two options, go with a 2 box set-up with either and ECI/r + HG612 modem and a suitable router that will support (what people incorrectly refer to as) MER. My current weapon of choice is an AC56U, but any of the WRT supported routers will do this. I'd suggest if you want a decent router you opt for the ARM based dual core CPU's rather than the old single core versions like the AC66U that people mistakenly assume is superior and still sells for similar money. Going this route allows you to reboot/flash router at will without rebooting the modem and potentially affecting your profile.

The other option is one of the TP Link (VR200/900 are popular), Billion and Netgear are other options that get positive feedback but don't buy an ASUS DSL-XXXXX all in one, they've made some steps forward (after years of issues) but i'd not recommend one to anyone (see the thread in this forum about the DSL-AC68U).

I've got a fileserver and a couple of other bits wired in to a network that I do a fair bit of transferring between so running at 1/10 my current speed would suck. A lot.

Sky will soon be releasing a new router for their Q system. If you could hold on a while they may supply that one free to new customers.

Notice how I mention if you use a gigabit switch? The implication being that if you do then all LAN devices connected to it will potentially be able to transfer to each other at gigabit speeds. It's only traffic going to/from the WAN side that would be limited to 100mbit and as your VDSL connection won't ever go above 100mbit (technical limit in optimum conditions) it's not an issue. Granted if the SH102 supported AC for example and you used it's wifi then you'd be limited to 100mbit but as it doesn't then again it's irrelevant.

Only 2 ethernet ports and no doubt it'll cost the earth :(

The new Sky Q router is free to Sky Q subscribers, if you aren't a Sky Q customer then you can buy one (i don't know the price yet). Launch prices for Sky Q are £99 set-up and around £12 extra on top of the existing subscription. For new (not existing) subscribers Sky Q starts at £42/m.

I'm currently using a Draytek 2860n for VDSL with BT, excellent bit of kit.
