Sky+ Replacement-whats best?

You should way up the cost of the boxes over time. It may be worth just paying sky £10pm for their recording service.

I would normally agree, as all of the other offerings are toss in comparison to a decent SkyHD box...but this guy has the old sky+ system. This EPG goes back to what...the 90's? Whenever it was it very much shows, so he is going to need new hardware along the line anyway.

I have the SKY+HD box but am unwilling to pay £10 per month just to record free chanells - I have had sky for a long time so have paid for the box in my opinion!

Nothing else is as good. There are other technically better solutions, but the £10/month isnt worth the simplicity of the sky box, and the downgrade of the UI in my opinion.

If you have a pc you can plug into the tv you could just get a DVB-S card for a cheapass solution. I use mythtv for this but I'm told windows media center is good too. You'll get BBC and ITV HD plus hard disk recording\timeshifting etc.

The worst part about having freesat from Sky, is they don't filter out unavailable channels.

Jumping to a channel, just to see "upgrade your subscription" is annoying.

Marketing, i am convinved that this is in no way a quirk of the system, they show you exactly what it is on (ie, what you are not able to view), and make it very easy to re-subscribe ;)

I am not the biggest fan of the Sky UI so I would say Freeview+ as it has more channels than Freesat+ and Freesat from Sky is a load of rubbish with no channels and doesn't record unless you pay and you literally spend 90% of your time finding something you can actually watch! perhaps you can make a favourates list but then whats the point of that "awesome " UI.

Basically just get Freeview+ if you can get digital reception.
Freesat if you can't get any digital reception
Freesat from sky if you are retarded.
Sky+ / SkyHD if you have money and want the most channels and don't mind that Rupert Murdoch is a *****.

No doubt, but when my nan rings me to say "I can't get anything on the sky box".. and I go over to find out she's just up in the 300's, and have to explain AGAIN that she only gets a handful of channels for free.. it's annoying :p

I changed to Sky Freesat with the option of paying £10 per month for the recording facility. Being a Sky subscriber you can still purchase Sky Box Office films.

£10 per month just for the option to record seems a bit steep, should be like a mobile phone, once the contract it up, its yours, including all its facilities should you decide to go elsewhere!

Build yourself together a htpc, throw in a tuner card, windows media centre. VOILA!

The set top boxes are an absolutely disgrace technology wise, using the lowest quality components for the bare minimum of service.

Humax FOXSAT-HDR is great apart from the buffer issue.

I resold my Foxsat-hdr as the worst piece of technology i have ever owned. The best thing about it is the supplied universal remote.
